I know a population of people who have gone through this 👇🏿👇🏿 Eunuchisation— the process of reducing a population or movement to this state. • Eunuch class — the social layer that specializes in eloquent helplessness. The term is deliberately harsh. It distinguishes between those who are temporarily defeated and those who have internalized permanent powerlessness as their political identity. A political eunuch is a person or group that has been so thoroughly oppressed, demoralized, or conditioned that they have lost the capacity (or will) to resist. They endlessly narrate their suffering, recycle the oppressor’s actions as daily commentary, and marvel at the oppressor’s power — while producing no serious strategy, organization, or risk-bearing action to change their condition. Why the term fits Historically, eunuchs were castrated men kept in positions of proximity to power. They could observe, advise, gossip, and administer, but they could not threaten the ruler with heirs or independent force. The political version captures the same condition: speech without potency, proximity to events without the ability (or willingness) to act on them.

In the English translation of Pedagogy of the Oppressed (specifically under Chapter 4's section on "Cultural Invasion"), Freire notes how the physical, geographic world of the oppressor dominates and attempts to overwrite the world of the oppressed. A mucambo (historically originating from the Bantu word mu-kambo, meaning a hideout or cabin built by runaway slaves in Brazil) is used by Freire to represent the impoverished shanties or favela huts of the marginalized. He sets this in stark opposition to the casa-grande (the colonial big house or plantation mansion of the ruling elite).

• The Architecture of Inferiority: The oppressor’s city—with its luxury, solid infrastructure, and grand architecture—is presented as the "standard" of civilization. The mucambo, by contrast, is treated as an eyesore or an abnormality. This physical disparity forces the oppressed to internalise a sense of natural inferiority, making them feel like outsiders in their own land. • The "Culture of Silence": Because the oppressed are forced to live in precarious, temporary mucambos, their daily reality is consumed entirely by survival. This physical reality prevents them from stepping back to critically reflect on why they are poor, leading to a fatalistic worldview where they accept their poverty as an unchangeable law of nature.

My Sister’s Lover - My latest novel 🤎 All year I have been talking about “working on my book.” Well… she’s almost ready. 😁 My Sister’s Lover will be in major bookstores across South Africa from 13 October 2026. This one is very close to my heart. I set the story in Mambale, the village where I grew up. Writing about a place so familiar was bittersweet. There was something nostalgic about bringing the places I knew so well into a fictional world, but also liberating about being able to reshape them and let my imagination take me wherever the story needed to go. I wanted to honour my home, but I also love drama and pushing limits. So I often found myself wondering whether I might offend the very ground that raised me 🫢 I intentionally positioned my main character’s home where my own home stands eMambale. I even placed the shops in the order they actually were at the growth point: General Dealer, Bottle Store, Hardware… Okay, I’m going on and on 🤭. But you see what I mean. Mambale is not just a setting; it’s home. I poured my heart and soul into this one. I laughed, I stressed, I ghosted my publisher when the story got too intense and I continuously fell in and out of love with the characters and their story. And now I can finally say: “It will be here in under a month and pre-orders are officially open.” 🥹😍 I hope you enjoy reading My Sister’s Lover as much as I enjoyed writing it. A million thanks to my wonderful publishers, Kwela Books & Johnathan Ball @jbp_local for making this journey such a beautiful one. Thank you for believing in me and helping me bring this book to life. And to everyone who has been asking, waiting, encouraging me and cheering me on, I can never thank you enough. You have no idea what that means to me. So, Dear Reader, I hereby present to you My Sister’s Lover. She’s ready to meet you. 🥹 Pre-orders are open via the link in my bio (mysisterslover.netlify.app/). You can order directly from me, Takealot, Amazon or through a bookstore near you in South Africa. From my heart, Ndoboka. Ngiyabonga. Thank you. 🤎
