In 2016 Norway gave every 5-year-old child an iPad. Within a few years, Norway's reading scores plummeted and dropped below the OECD average. They ranked dead last out of 65 countries. Now Norway is spending millions of dollars to reverse this trend and get people reading.

Too important to have it cut with fluff. Dr Wright, in Savannah, said what she said abt reading. Take it or leave it alone; it's on you. I know this doesnt sit well with many... maybe that's part of the problem. We're sitting too well with illiteracy.

The film is sobering. People have to fight to ensure their children are educated. It's not a game. I appreciate these parents sharing their journey.
I watched Left Behind AGAIN this week. It documents a group of parents in New York City who came together to fund and create the South Bronx Literacy Academy, the city's first public school designed specifically for students with dyslexia. Parents saw their children struggling, and they felt that the system wasn’t shifting fast enough. Thanks, @KJWinEducation, for bringing this to my attention! Check it out here: leftbehindthefilm.com/?ss_so…

And yet the Structured Literacy training and OG Certification I took that cost about as much in time and money as a Masters degree is not recognized by @OCT_OEEO and has direct impact on my student’s achievement as measured by early reading screeners.
“The fact that teachers with master’s degrees are no more effective in the classroom, on average, than their colleagues without advanced degrees is one of the most consistent findings in education research.  In a study published in 2011, Paul Peterson and I confirmed this finding by comparing the student achievement of the same teachers before and after they earned master’s degrees, and found no impact. This finding may be non-controversial among researchers, but it has largely been ignored by policymakers.  Ninety-six percent of the 112 major U.S. school districts included in the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) Teacher Contract Database pay teachers with MA degrees more than those with BA degrees, with an average difference of $3,205 in the first year of teaching, $4,176 in the fifth year, and $8,411 at the top of the salary schedule.  The size of this pay bump varies widely, topping out at over $30,000 in three districts in Maryland.”

'Monosyllabic' is not. ‘Abbreviation’ is 12 letters. ‘Thesaurus’ doesn’t have a synonym. 'Non-hyphenated' is hyphenated. Say what you will about English, but it has a sense of humor.

Ontario’s Human Rights Commission concluded that its school system is systematically failing to teach children to read. Not because teachers don’t care, but because the system relies on approaches we’ve known for years don’t work. The report is clear: too many pupils are being denied their right to read due to ineffective methods, inconsistent interventions and a lack of evidence-based practice. The result? A generation of children left struggling unnecessarily, with lifelong consequences. If Scotland carried out the same kind of independent review, I fear we’d see a similar pattern. We still rely heavily on approaches that prioritise guessing strategies over decoding, that underplay phonics, and that leave struggling readers waiting far too long for help. Reading is the foundation for every other part of a child’s education. When a system gets it wrong, everything else suffers. We should be brave enough to look honestly at our own practices and make the changes needed so every child in Scotland learns to read well, early, and with confidence. If Ontario can confront this, so can we.

This was my third ever peer reviewed paper and second meta. I’m proud to say that I have two more papers to be published soon. The journey from teacher/blog writer to publishing peer reviewed articles was very challenging. Special thanks to all my coauthors who made this possible, Scott, Kathryn, Jill, Sky, and Josh.
