We know that going to Uni is one of the best routes to social mobility for young people from poorer families 👇
Fully agree with @UniversitiesUK call for better student maintenance for these youngsters.
@suttontrust
Going to university can be life changing, creating opportunities people may not otherwise have had🌟
No one should be put off because of financial concerns.
We're calling on the government to increase the maintenance support package in the #AutumnBudget

ALT Quote from Jennifer Dominic, Senior Brand and Customer Manager at Canterbury Christ Church University. "University is the beginning of doors opening. When you cultivate those opportunities properly, you make your university experience more than just a paid-for experience. It has a bigger value than anyone could think of."

Higher-than-expected inflation has continued to erode the real value of maintenance loans.
Students in 2023–24 will be entitled to borrow 11% less towards their living costs than they were in 2020–21, a cut of £110 a month for the poorest students.

Average student rent now outstrips the maximum maintenance loan. Those who blithely assure young people that the HE funding model makes university affordable ('no upfront fees', 'repay only once you start earning', etc.) perhaps need to reflect on this. theguardian.com/commentisfre…

There's also the Q of the overall amount of maintenance available (through loans or grants) - maintenance loans in England are only going up 2.8% this year vs 10%+ inflation, 33% of students from working class families are skipping meals to cut costs - suttontrust.com/our-research…

Really hoping we do see a re-introduction of maintenance grants. The poorest students shouldn't be loaded with the biggest debts because their families can't afford to support them with living costs.

🚨 NEW: A third of students from working class families and 28% of students overall say they have skipped meals to save on food costs during the cost of living crisis, our research finds.
