For years, gangs groomed, drugged, raped and trafficked thousands of girls, some as young as eleven, in towns across England: Rotherham, Rochdale, Telford and Oldham. The Jay Report found around 1,400 victims in Rotherham alone between 1997 and 2013.
What makes it a wake-up call goes beyond the crimes themselves. It’s how many people knew and looked away. Police officers dismissed victims as “consenting.” Social workers and councillors kept quiet because they feared being called racist. Baroness Casey’s national audit in 2025 concluded that institutions repeatedly avoided the ethnicity of the perpetrators for fear of the reaction.
A country that protects its own reputation over its children has lost its moral compass. The scandal is the abuse and the silence that let it continue for decades.
