You can now explore the entire US with 1-meter 3D LiDAR data!
I rebuilt my USGS elevation viewer so you can search any address, zoom all the way into the terrain, and slide between LiDAR and satellite imagery.
The detail is incredible. You can pick out riverbeds, ridgelines, old roads, drainage patterns, and terrain completely hidden by trees.
Try it here and export your own animated GIF: mattmullin.space/state-lidar
Happy exploring!
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The linked app visualizes USGS 3DEP as Art series maps based on ~10 m resolution DEMs, not 1 m LiDAR. Nationwide 1 m seamless DEM coverage is still in progress and incomplete.

I want to hear a bodybuilding science person talk about the uterus. A body can just decide to build one of the strongest muscles and there’s not really a workout plan besides occasional BH contractions!!

The piece on the left was made by me almost three years ago. The picture on the right is of the first Przewalski’s horse foal born on the Central Kazakhstan steppe in 200 years. So much love for the return of the wild horses🐎

I’m concerned that Flock will go the way of Juul - one well known company takes tons of heat and then a million other worse, less legible companies appear to fill in the gap left behind

One underappreciated function of criminal jury trials is that they give the govt useful information about which laws/policies enjoy broad community support—sufficient, say, to reliably produce unanimous guilty verdicts from a jury that has been given an honest account of its true role in the system—and which ones do not.
Grand juries were meant to play a similar role and occasionally do, but they’ve been so thoroughly captured and managed by prosecutors that they’re largely ornamental at this point.
A Clermont County man who faced felony vandalism charges for allegedly destroying a Flock safety camera in Union Township has had his case dismissed.
Cody Morelock was accused of damaging the camera system located on Mount Carmel-Tobasco Road near Glenrose Lane on June 13, according to Union Township police.
Investigators claimed he removed the bolts holding the equipment in place, causing the camera, solar panel, and support pole to fall before he destroyed them.
Police said footage from other nearby cameras helped identify him as the suspect. The Flock camera was leased by the Union Township Police Department, and authorities estimated the damage at more than $1,000.
A Clermont County grand jury ultimately declined to indict Morelock on the felony charges.
Ohio is anti-Flock!
I believe I have successfully fulfilled the hardest fashion prompt we’ve found so far: fit in as a groomsman at 8 months pregnant, shop while only 7 months pregnant, secondhand hard mode

My students sometimes ask why they should memorise things in the age of Google and LLMs. But internalised facts are your bullshit filters and your raw material for creative association. Facts outside your head are inert.
