The “ish” in Healthy-ish might actually be the most important part.
Because healthy isn’t perfect.
The “ish” is the learning.
It’s questioning.
It’s paying attention.
It’s making better choices when we can.
It’s growing some of our food while still buying plenty of it.
It’s cooking from scratch most often, but not feeling guilty when we don’t.
It’s moving our bodies because they deserve to move, and resting them because they deserve that too.
It’s caring about what we eat without making food a source of guilt or shame.
It’s changing one thing at a time instead of trying to overhaul our entire lives overnight.
It’s understanding that what works for one person might not work for another.
It’s getting something wrong, learning something new and changing our minds.
It’s mindset.
Gratitude.
Curiosity.
Balance.
Accountability.
And slow, sustainable change.
It’s knowing there will always be another thing to learn, another skill to build, another habit we could improve.
And being completely okay with that.
We don’t want Healthy-ish to make anyone feel like they aren’t doing enough.
We want it to remind people how much they can do.
Grow one tomato.
Cook one more meal at home.
Learn where your food comes from.
Read one label.
Plant something for the pollinators.
Spend more time outside.
Ask more questions.
Change one habit.
Then maybe change another.
There is no finish line where you finally become “healthy.”
We’re just trying to live a little better, understand a little more, and take better care of ourselves and the little piece of the world around us.
That’s the “ish.”
And honestly, we just think there’s a whole lot of freedom in it. 💛
There's a whole different kind of satisfaction in watching the countertops slowly clear away as we eat, preserve, store, and save seeds for next year.
I have genuinely enjoyed sorting through and checking on our harvest each day.
After all the time, love and hard work that went into growing it, you really do form a connection with your food!
We have a very short growing season here in Ontario.
Forced to harvest so many of our tomatoes while they were still green when frost threatened to take our harvest!
But all you need is one blushing tomato to turn them all!!
Ripening tomatoes release ethylene gas, a natural plant hormone that helps encourage the others to ripen too!
There are a few ways to do this indoors.
You can spread them out on a plate on shallow box under a towel, or use one of my favourite methods.... a brown paper bag! Folding the bag closed helps hold in some of that ethylene gas.
Ideally, you want no more than a couple of layers to prevent bruising. But I break my own rule!
I strategically fill my bags pretty full, keeping the ripest tomatoes on top and checking them almost daily!
I sort through every tomato, remove the ripe ones, check for soft spots, and rearrange the rest according to their weight and ripeness.
Just look at this progress!
This is after 2 and a half weeks.
The growing season may be over, but we're determined to make the most of every last tomato!
Good Thursday morning, everyone!!!
What a beautiful drive to work! Thick fog and magnificent old trees lining the country roads.
Then, coming down into the valley, the fog completely clears and I spot a BOBCAT trotting along the tree line on the roadside! You could just tell by its stride alone!!!
What a morning! 😺
Hope your Thursday is off to a great start, too!!

Signing off a little early tonight, it's been quite the day! We're feeling a little extra grateful tonight for the things we sometimes take for granted.
We hope you're all having a nice evening and get a good restorative nights rest.
Goodnight from us 💛
It's been so many years since we've lived somewhere we might actually get a couple trick-or-treaters! 🎃
Of course, I had to pick up a pumpkin!
Now to find out if I remember how to carve one.
Overthinking never solves the thing. Even the tiniest step forward can make something overwhelming feel a little more manageable.
We've got a straggler!!
Been keeping a close eye on these milkweed pods so we can help spread their seeds around our property!
Good Wednesday morning!!
Another morning, another opportunity to enjoy this beautiful life we're building. There's so much to appreciate when we take the time to notice.
We hope you all have yourselves an absolutely wonderful Wednesday!
What a wonderful day it's been!
Tried something new today, and it worked out beautifully! Always so grateful for the chance to learn something new.
Hope you're all enjoying your evening and have a wonderful night's sleep.
Goodnight from us 💛
After about 5 hours in the freezer, we have thick, rich, and creamy homemade vanilla ice cream for dessert!!
And is it ever fantastic!
No toppings even needed!
Four simple ingredients, no fancy equipment.
I can't believe I made this!!! ☺️
What's for dinner tonight, friends?!
We are having a nice hot bowl of my homemade root vegetable bisque, avec bacon!
Pumpkin seeds on top!
Homemade, freshly baked, whole wheat sourdough slices slathered in butter!
And that's soup number one finished and tucked away in the freezer for future meals!
Roasted root vegetable bisque, made with our homegrown carrots and two little sweet potatoes, along with locally grown butternut squash, more sweet potatoes, onions and garlic!
Roasted with fresh thyme and sage, then blended with our homemade beef bone broth!
I then simmered everything together for about 20 minutes and cooled before storing!
First 100% whole wheat sourdough loaf in the new home is a wrap!
Still got it!!! 🙌
It's DOOOUGH time!!! 😃
I am so excited to get back into the swing of baking our own bread and all the others homemade sourdough goodies we've missed!
It's been a couple of months since my last loaf turned focaccia in that hot, off grid trailer!
When I last tucked Marge into the fridge, had no idea we'd be buying a house!!
Soon the trees will stand completely bare against the autumn sky showing off what the leaves have kept hidden all summer.
Every beautifully imperfect branch will soon be revealed 🍂
You can just make a simple 4 ingredient, no unnecessary additives, and no fancy equipment, homemade ice cream right on your back deck!
You can just do things!!
