Yesterday I stood at the site of the Central Park attack and called for a reckoning. A woman was approached by a man with a knife, dragged into a wooded area, and sexually assaulted. Violence against women has surged under Letitia James. Domestic violence is up. Strangulation incidents are up. Orders of protection are up. Rape is up. Across the state, I’ve had women tell me they don’t feel safe walking to school, walking to the bus station, walking around at night. I’ve talked to a grandmother in Buffalo whose granddaughter was threatened at gunpoint during a carjacking. I’ve talked to college girls in Binghamton who described severely mentally ill and drug-addicted individuals trying to attack them at the bus station. I’ve talked to homeless women in Syracuse who worry about being sexually assaulted at homeless shelters. I’ve talked to aunties in Queens who tell me that they are being targeted for chain-snatchings and their homes are being targeted for burglaries because of the jewelry inside. Women have pulled me aside at events upstate to tell me about domestic violence situations they could not escape because our broken bail laws result in attackers being released and going back home the same day. Where is our attorney general? When confronted on these issues, she has no answers. Letitia James has failed the women of New York. It’s time for a change at AG.

Tremendous day getting people out to vote for a safer New York!

This revelation is yet another embarrassment for our state coming from Letitia James. The Attorney General’s office is supposed to be the chief law enforcement office in the state and has more than 700 attorneys. The fact that they can’t investigate a sexual assault case with the resources they have shows Letitia James is not running a serious office. And New York taxpayers will be forced to pay millions of dollars to outside attorneys because of it. A 39-year-old woman was sexually assaulted at knife point in Central Park last night. At 8:30 p.m. This comes just one week after a 32-year-old woman who was biking through the park—and stopped to pick up earbuds that had fallen—was ambushed by three men and punched in the head. Violence against women has surged under Letitia James — up 41% in NYC — making us all less safe and less free.
