Daniel Sheetz (Toledo, IA) wished to learn if flame-weeding could be a viable option in organic soybean production, which typically entails several tillage passes for weed control. bit.ly/3TGQiTC

Flame weeding is the process of passing a flame/fire over a weed briefly to heat the plant tissues just enough to kill them. The goal is not to burn up the weed, but to destroy plant tissue so that the weed dies. Flame weeding kills the above ground portion of the weeds

I just bought one of those “flame throwers” for weeds and ice. First thought after trying it, “this would be great for green chilies!”

"Unlike herbicides, a flame weeder does not contaminate; it is environmentally safe & doesn't kill microorganisms in the soil. Users report significant increase in yield & Gogos points out that flame weeding is a “much, much cheaper” weed control method compared to herbicide use"
Flame-weeding technologies reduce the use of harmful chemicals while cutting carbon emissions.

Did you know propane is nontoxic and stored in a sealed system to prevent soil contamination? Not only that, but propane-powered solutions like flame weeding actually improve soil’s organic matter as flamed plants decompose – bit.ly/3IqnOYv. #WorldSoilDay

Burning weeds from the surface is totally ineffective for controlling them, obvious to anyone who's dealt with weeds as a charlatan, actually dopey propaganda gimmick. The remaining roots quickly grow back. Even whole forests grow back after raging wildfires consume them, in time

Weeds are evolving resistance to weed killers faster than new chemistries are being invented. Some may even be resistant to herbicides that don't yet exist. My story for @nytmag, with support from @ucbsoj 11th Hour Food and Farming fellowship. nytimes.com/2021/08/18/magaz…

Weeds are out in full force in the garden! Your best offense, is a good defense: 1. Identify the weed 2. Remove by hand weeding, hoeing, tilling, covering, or flame weeding. 3. Prevent future weeds with mulch More about controlling weeds 🔗 extension.illinois.edu/blogs…
