I seem to recall the EFF fighting against the VAT increase, pushing to end data expiry from telecommunications providers, tabling the Insourcing Bill, and tabling the Student Debt Cancellation Bill—all since the 2024 elections . Yet because they don't sing "abahambe," you claim they aren't prioritizing South Africans? Ehh

Hot take: Being ahead of the curve actually sucks. Better to catch the momentum. Those that catch momentum are always the billboard for that which they catch. Not the actual pioneers. Pioneers are seldom recognised in real time.

Breaking Bad - Another Mexican cartel-linked meth/tik lab uncovered outside Musina in South Africa. This brings to five the number of "Mexican meth" labs discovered here since 2024. See also: iol.co.za/news/crime-and-cou…
BREAKING NEWS: Hawks and SAPS have uncovered a suspected industrial-scale crystal meth lab on a farm in Musina, Limpopo. Drugs and lab equipment worth an estimated R600m, plus cash, were seized. Five suspects aged 20–47 were arrested: 2 Mexicans, 2 Zimbabweans and 1 Malawian. The operation followed a two-month investigation. It is the third clandestine drug lab shut down in Limpopo. The suspects face drug manufacturing and possession charges and are expected in Musina Magistrates’ Court on 24 August.

And this is what Geordin Hill-Lewis says he wants for the whole of South Africa; 3rd party private companies "helping" to provide municipal services to citizens.
South Africa, you in danger gurl.
Conradie Park residents say they are being charged different electricity rates through Smart Matter, a third-party provider brought in by the City.
Residents are also raising concerns about having no say over changes introduced by the third-party provider.

The very strategy is based on deception and lies, moving to Johannesburg a few months ago, just to run for mayor to import racist policies Their plans for the city of Johannesburg is outright imperialist violence. Privatisation of human rights should be rejected. Outright rejected.

One of my favourite pieces of Kuli's lore is that her Honours research at UCT was on Lady Anne Barnard’s letters, studying the gossip and scandals Barnard recorded while living and travelling in the Cape.
There’s something wonderfully full-circle about studying a woman documenting Cape society through letters, observation and gossip, and then building a career doing her own distinctly South African version of social commentary centuries later.
Kuli’s commentary could be controversial and sometimes genuinely contentious, but it also functioned as a kind of vernacular social archive. Her Sunday World work became significant enough to be examined academically in work on post-apartheid race and representation at UCT.

Another pop culture side note: One of my favourite details about Interrogation Room is that novelist K. Sello Duiker was the commissioning editor for this piece.
📺 SABC: Interrogation Room (2004–2008)
This was the 10-year anniversary of democracy. The SAPS Women's Network had just been established (2003), leadership programmes reserved 70% of places for women, and employment equity targets sought to increase women's representation.
Captain Thandiswa Skweyiya(Nambitha Mpumlwana) wasn't appearing in a vacuum she emerged alongside a real national project of reimagining who could embody state authority. Unlike many contemporary readings of representation, the series does not simply place a Black woman in a position of power and move on. Instead, it repeatedly stages the resistance to that transformation.
What I particularly appreciate is that the series never portrays Captain Skweyiya as flawless. She is intelligent but fallible, compassionate but disciplined, emotionally affected by her work without losing professional authority. This complexity matters because representation is most transformative when characters are allowed to be fully human rather than symbolic ideals.

A*Pop Culture: Some of the Divas Who Soundtracked South Africa's 2000s(90s*)
One of the things I love about revisiting this pop culture era is how confidently it refused to fit into a single aesthetic.
The media ecology of the period also deserves attention. Before social media, celebrity was slower and arguably more curated. Artists built identities through music videos, album covers, magazine editorials, television interviews and live performances.
Visual culture mattered because audiences encountered musicians as complete cultural texts. Hairstyles became trends. Fashion choices became conversation. Album artwork became iconic.
