I cannot express the amount of special interest pressure to not talk about Iowa’s cancer rates.
Lobbyists aggressively want this question swept under the rug.
Now, this is the centerpiece of the Iowa governor campaign and $20 million has been spent on the issue.
Lobbyists can no longer hide the truth.
We can fix so much in food and healthcare if we can have an honest conversation about why Iowa has the highest cancer rates in the world - and how to fix it.
It is obvious to anyone with a brain that if farmers are being mass poisoned by the chemicals they are using, that has profound impacts for Americans who are eating that food.
NEW - In Iowa, cancer upended the midterms.
An Iowa GOP strategist called it a "liability" for the party that's held one-party control for a decade.
In '26, $20M+ spent on ads mentioning cancer. In '22, it was less than $200K.

"It’s akin to the government taking $290 from each American taxpayer and then handing about $25,000 to each farm—all financed through borrowing at increasingly high interest rates."
(And that's not even all of it!)
My latest for @TheDispatch tallies & laments the $46B in unilateral, blatantly-political support that Trump has given American farmers to offset the harms of his own tariff & foreign policies.
It's all very bad - and there's likely more to come.

“Fix the damn water.”
As Iowa voters head to the polls Nov. 3, growing concerns over water pollution and rising cancer rates are putting agricultural runoff and public health at the center of the election conversation.

NEW: Pope Leo XIV is set to become the first sitting pontiff in the Catholic Church’s two-thousand-year history to vote in a secular election.
Leo requested an Illinois mail ballot on Oct. 3, and it was sent to his brother John’s home in New Lenox, Ill.
John Prevost visited the pope at the Vatican on Wednesday and may now be carrying the ballot back to the Will County clerk by hand. thelettersfromleo.com/p/pope…

New low for the Demuth camp. They put out an op-ed by Rep. Dawn Gillman in a futile attempt to discredit Nicole Smith-Holt about INSULIN affordability. Who do you trust more- Nicole Smith-Holt, or a state rep who wasn't even in the legislature when Alec's Law was passed?

Far from the independent polling we have been seeing thus far. But if these races are breaking hard the DFL’s direction, the State Legislature results could be a nightmare for the GOP. (Also note this is the last 4-year term for the State Senate until the 2032 election as 2030 will be a 2-year term)

Witkoff tried to convince Budanov of how rich he could be if he sold out his country by allowing Russian pipelines to again flow through Ukraine. Budanov ended the meeting.
Content of Tense Conversation Between Budanov and Trump's Team Revealed
Negotiations between the Ukrainian delegation and Donald Trump's special envoys in Miami, as reported by Le Monde, escalated into a conflict. According to the publication, during a three-hour meeting at the Shell Bay golf club, Steve Witkoff "with irritation" demanded that Kyrylo Budanov, head of Zelenskyy's office, cease strikes on Russian oil refineries.
Budanov, per Le Monde's information, "barely contained his anger" and felt that he was being "treated like a child, trying to teach him how to make money." The Americans presented an ambitious plan for postwar "regional prosperity," which envisioned resuming the transit of Russian oil and gas to Europe through Ukraine, with dividends paid to Kyiv.
Budanov was outraged that such a deal would tie Ukraine to Moscow, after which the negotiations broke off. When the meeting resumed, the Americans proposed accepting a deal for supplies of Russian diesel to the United States.
The publication's sources noted that they had never seen Ukrainians "so upset and alarmed." Zelenskyy's entourage described the situation as "hopeless," since Trump's envoys "think only about business."

It’s dangerous and unlawful for Pres. Trump’s State Dept. to use political donations and voting history as criteria for promotions. Our Foreign Service Officers are public servants and diplomats and should be promoted based on their abilities, not loyalty to any president.
