I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I am not one to sit still! I will flourish in a home with someone that will keep me mentally and physically active! I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. β€οΈ π»β€οΈ π»β€οΈ π»

β‘οΈ NOUGAT IS ON THE EPL FOR MEDICAL REASONS - Nougat is diabetic with diabetic neuropathy. He has been started on treatment for his diabetes. Nougat will need daily maintenance with their medical condition and further follow up with outside vet care. Nougat has allowed all handling. This evaluation/diagnosis means that NOUGAT will be given very little time for rescue/foster/adoption.π₯π₯π₯π₯
A volunteer writes: Twelve year old Nougat and ten year old Marzipan were brought to the Manhattan Care Center as their owner was taken into care. They are two gentle souls who must have been such wonderful companions. They are calm, well mannered, welcoming of staff and volunteers (Marzipan is a bit shyer than Nougat), leaning into pets and even purring. Both pets seem to have been well cared for. They have a good weight, a thick and shiny coat, are already spayed and neutered and know their way around people. Nougat, though was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and is being treated for it. Marzipan is apparently healthy. Both have as expected, senior teeth. Nougat and marzipan are great names for the two housemates as they are so sweet but Marzipan(made of almond paste) is usually white, so I wonder...Marzipan and Nougat would love to go home, may be it could be with you and together(if at all possible)....They are both waiting for their forever at the Manhattan Care Center. What my friends at ACC say about NOUGAT: I can go home today! My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am a sweet, social, older gentleman, looking for the perfect forever home! I am a cat that is in need of a lap! I can't wait to be your new lap cat. β€οΈ π»β€οΈ π»β€οΈ π»

β‘οΈ MILO IS ON THE EPL FOR BEHAVIORAL REASONS - He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. He is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. - This designation often means that the cat will be given very little time for rescue/foster/adoption.π₯π₯π₯π₯
I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! A volunteer writes: Milo wants to be part of the action, he just isn't always sure how to explain that to people. This is relatable and I feel for him. He's a go, go, go, go kind of cat who wants to do all this going at his own pace. Milo's improved quite a bit since coming to us and seems characteristically eager to demonstrate this through repeatedly leaping off his den with a flourish. Since I wasn't entirely sure where Milo was going with this, I offered a pipe cleaner feather, which happily kept his interest for a few moments before he decided nuzzles were better. Then he decided that it was probably best to see the town, as it were, leaning his whole little cat self over my arm in his efforts to get just a tiny bit better view. Milo's hoping to see and be seen, which though it might be easier said than done for a shelter cat such as himself, is hoping to be seen by you. β€οΈ π»β€οΈ π»β€οΈ π»

πΎBehavior Notes:
Eli is fearful and skittish in the shelter. He has displayed trembling, a tucked tail, lowered head, flinching, and avoidance. On 10/21, he growled when staff attempted to leash him. He has also thrashed when frightened by leash pressure.
However, with gentle baby talk and patient handling, Eli has made progress! He has approached staff voluntarily, followed them outside, walked close beside his handler, and remained quiet in the outdoor run. He quickly pottied outside and returned to his kennel without major difficulty.

π Eli is only 12 months old. Instead of enjoying his puppyhood, he was found tied to a strangerβs car and is now struggling to understand the frightening world around him.
PLEASE SHARE this frightened puppy with rescues and potential fosters. He deserves the chance to learn that people can be kind and that he is finally safe!

β‘οΈ UDON IS ON THE EPL FOR MEDICAL REASONS β He is a sweet, young adult cat with a severe upper respiratory infection. He is not eating and needs supportive care in a veterinary clinic in order to recover. Behaviorally, Udon is caustious to accept pets due to FAS but he will tolerate handling for medical treatments. NOT EATING/APPETITE ISSUES ARE A DEATH SENTENCE IN SHELTER. This evaluation/diagnosis means that UDON will be given very little time for rescue/foster/adoption. π₯π₯π₯π₯
A volunteer writes: Udon is a cute Tabby boy part of a large family of cats(fifteen to be more precise). Their owner lost their home and all the housemates had to come to the Manhattan Care Center. We do not know anything about Udon, his true temperament, his behavior with his friends or his owner...Nothing. At the care center, he is a shy soul, staying at the back of his cubby but more recently(see his video), accepting caresses, leaning slightly into pets and closing his eyes with gentle words. He even made biscuits for me and another volunteer. Something good is cooking here ad I hope that Udon will soon reveal what a good and sweet cat he truly is. Like his housemates(they all have been adopted!!), Udon needs to be discovered, adopted and join a new family for many years of shared happiness. Come and meet Udon very soon at the Manhattan Care Center! Update:Udon is really a very nice cat who has come a long way!He is not shy at all anymore but I knew he was getting there, slowly but surely. Udon has a big cold but his sweet nature and his love for attention and cuddles still drive him to seek all the love he can get!!!Udon needs your help now! He is sooo worth your attention! β‘οΈ BENNY IS ON THE EPL FOR BEHAVIORAL REASONS - He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. This designation often means that the cat will be given very little time for rescue/foster/adoption.π₯π₯π₯π₯
What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. Benny is not open to interaction at this time and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. Because his previous owner reports "he can be skittish when there are loud noises but will usually want to be around people leaning in for pets when in a quiet calm environment" and has no history of behavioral issues in a home environment, we believe the behavior seen in the care center is shelter-specific and this cat would make a great pet, but is really struggling in the shelter environment. This cat is suitable for adopters with previous cat experience who are willing to work with a cat who needs time and patience to help him adjust to their new home. β€οΈ π»β€οΈ π»β€οΈ π»
