"He looked like a melancholy man who had been looking for a leak in life’s gas-pipe with a lighted candle."
Happy 145th Birthday to P.G. Wodehouse, the absolute king of literary similes.
I once had a boss who'd call me into his office after lunch to watch him play Solitaire. I'd humor him for a few minutes and then say, "Can I leave now? I have work to do."
"No, check out this move!" he'd insist. Then proceed to play a few more rounds while I sat there bored. This was way before smartphones.
A few months later, he got fired. He called me into his office, butt-hurt: "I can't believe you betrayed me."
"Huh? I don't know what you're talking about."
I had no clue other executives were conspiring against him, but I was glad not to have to sit in his office and watch him play with the door closed while he reeked of alcohol.
Island girl, tell me:
who salts your nights
when the sea is rising,
and the frogs' chorus
lifts the tempo with it.
Warmth from an inner lamp
that will not break the mood.
Silhouettes sailing a slow sea,
words waning to whimpers.
The tide's reach, always inland.

The twist in the tale is that I opened As the crow flies many many years ago, and I still haven't found a way to close it.
Thank you, Jeffrey Archer, for teaching me that the only thing better than a good story is one you never see coming. #JeffreyArcher

something reached out from beneath my bed.
i made contact.
it pulled me underneath.
the dead were dancing...
a graveyard cabaret.
then they made room for me.

I don’t want you to be mine. I want you to be free and still choose to stay with me.

Plowing. Digging. Hammering.
Poking holes in the stratosphere
to escape this dimension.
Milking clouds as if they were cows,
tattering the sky’s frail nightgown.
Loneliness. Asthma gripping our chest,
taking by force what’s inherently ours—
a gallon of breath, a bucket of love.
How ironic, our lack of faith,
for we rely on the intangible.

I pay for editing, proofreading. I reread my manuscripts after. Seven years later, I’m still finding random errors in my books 😩. My consolation: best sellers from huge publishers have them, too. I’ve marked dozens of errors in books I’ve read. It seems I can find them more easily when the work isn’t mine. Machine grammar checks from now on.
I gift you a box of memories,
amalgam of lives,
souvenirs picked by owls—
who aren’t here.
Fresh realities ring surreal
in my right ear.
My heart lags behind a brain
primed for change,
seeking solace every minute.
Grasping is inane.
