My latest photo assignment for The Guardian “The Gullah Geechee Fight for A Legacy After Slavery”. I traveled between St. Helena, Sapelo Island, Hilton Head Island, and Savannah, GA documenting the descendants of the Gullah Geechee and their fight to preserve their culture.

I love women who decided their life was going to be beautiful and then just went and made it that way.

I love that period when you find a great album & you don't care about anything except the album. You forget about everything, it’s just you & the album.

The real flex is knowing yourself so well that somebody misunderstanding you doesn't send you into an identity crisis. Like... okay? You're allowed to be wrong about me.

we often get too caught up in the appearance and insecurities of our own bodies we forget to be thankful that it’s functioning and working for us everyday

I am so grateful for this body. For the opportunity to be fully in it. How it works. Responds. Submits. How it carries on.

I have such a deep love for anybody who shows up for me. People don’t have to take time out of their day or life to celebrate you, support you or be there for you… so when they chose to do so, it means a lot.

Outside of your own archive, the PDFs are absolutely necessary (forget “good”) for GRANTS, FELLOWSHIPS, and other literary competitions. Having proof of publishing is the difference between being awarded and not! The PDFs can save your life! That’s what’s good!
micia@DeMiciaValonSep 5
I think it’s less about writers saving our work and more about the work now being unavailable in the digital space. What good does me or someone else having a PDF do if others don’t have easy access to read / reference?
