Looking forward to seeing details of this much needed renewal of UK’s road safety strategy. A critical test will be full implementation of GSR package of vehicle safety regulations including AEB, ISA etc. Without this UK will stay below best practice in global vehicle standards.
🚨 NEW: The Government is drawing up the “biggest overhaul” in road safety laws for decades
- Reducing the drink driving limit from 0.35 micrograms to 0.22
- Mandatory eye tests for over-70s every 3 years, with driving bans for failure
- Potential medical tests for conditions such as dementia
- Penalty points for drivers when passengers don't wear seatbelts
- Easier prosecution for drug driving by allowing the Police to rely on roadside saliva tests rather than blood tests
- Tougher penalties for uninsured drivers
- Measures to tackle "ghost plates"

➕ 4,959 people were killed or seriously injured in young driver collisions in 2023.
➕ The problem is getting worse with the numbers starting to increase again (4,529 in 2021 and 4,935 in 2022).
➕ Licensing reform is still part of the answer to bring these numbers down, and reduce the cost of insurance.
➕ Each ‘number’ is your family member, your neighbour, your school or college mate, or a member of your community.
➕ As @LilianGreenwood rightly says: “the lack of progress on road safety over the last decade has been inexcusable.”
