Weil’s wind-down memo basically reads: “we will help you get a job and pay you a bonus, but don’t forget to make sure your time is in!” The firm may not survive the month but the billable hour will outlive us all 😅 abovethelaw.com/2026/10/weil…

Peak British NIMBYism. Montenegro cannot have an embassy in Pimlico because the daughter of an American diplomat thinks an embassy beside her place is a breach of the human rights and equality act because of her anxiety disorder and long Covid. 🥀🥀🥀

fees like lots of fiddling, short-term things, new complications - a 'young entrepreneurs allowance', 'starter ISA', different business rates exemption threshold for retail, leisure & hospitality ... etc . I don't hear a clear, coherent vision or a simplification of tax system

In 1999 you had to earn over 4x the minimum wage to be considered a higher earner on the 40% rate. Today just 1.8x the minimum wage considered high earner! If the same minimum-wage-to-high-earner ratio was applied from 1999 you’d have to earn over £115k before hitting the 40% income tax rate. We’re seeing a level of wage compression that would make a Soviet era socialist blush.

We're going to raise people's taxes to give money to people who can't afford things because we put up taxes on things. This will be co-ordinated by a task force. Which will be funded by taxes.

CONFIRMED. Gas Standing Charges to be scrapped. I've just come out of a meeting with the Chancellor. The gas standing charge will be scrapped in 2027 (my guess, either for 1 Oct price cap or the 1 Jan 28 price cap). Having campaigned against the moral hazard of standing charges for years, I'm pleased. It's currently £108 a year. That cost will be shifted onto unit rates. We don't know how much yet, but I suspect just under 1p per kwH. The Chancellor also said he will be talking to Ofgem about how they get rid of the charge on electricity as well, but that is 'trickier' apparently and will take longer. This is primarily about the price cap standing charges. There will still be an open market, so other firms can offer other forms of prices with or without the standing charge. My suspicion is that once it goes on the price cap, it will tend to be reduced on other tariffs as well. As for those on fixes: if you get a fix now, the rate of your fix is fixed, so this should not affect it. You will pay what you pay and if it has standing charges they will continue (some asking if they should delay fixing because of this, no if a fix is right for you and will save you money, don't let this change that - this is about the structure of bills, as opposed to the actual costs on bills). About 60% of people will pay less due to this, 40% more. My guesstimate is the dividing line will be somewhere around 12,500 kilowatt hours of gas (can't know until there is actual pricing). According to a study by Nesta, this switch would leave the majority of people in all income groups under £100,000 better off. Of course, when this does come in, if we're still in the nightmare that we are right now, there will need to be support put in for vulnerable higher users, who will have to pay more. Though hopefully by then the mid-east will have calmed and energy prices lower. --------------- That's all long term. The biggest issue in energy right now is that we're expecting a 27% rise in the price cap in January. I asked the Chancellor whether he will be intervening on that. He told me I'd have to wait for the budget, but reading between the lines, yes, there will be an announcement today. Whether it's an increase in the Warm Home Discount, or whether it's council tax banned, or whether it's done via a payout for people in say council tax bands A-D as a proxy for household income as Rishi Sunak did who knows.

Israeli Exit Polls show Netanyahu's been defeated. Israel has rejected his dark vision, forever war & cruel, dystopic, authoritarian policies. But to succeed, the anti Netanyahu block needs to work with the Israeli Arab parties. I dearly hope this great chance isn't wasted

Exit polls showed neither Netanyahu's bloc nor the opposition reaching the 61 seats needed for a majority, resulting in a deadlock rather than a clear defeat. timesofisrael.com/exit-polls-sho… timesofisrael.com/eisenkot-and-n… afp.com/en/israel-oppo… theguardian.com/world/live/202…

Back in 2010, the minimum wage was £12,064 and the 'higher earner' band started at £43,875. You only paid 40% tax once you were earning 3.6x the minimum wage. There was clear incentive to progress, learn and aspire for more. As things stand, you now start paying 40% tax once you earn £50,270 which is just 1.83x the minimum wage. If it was the same multiple as 2010, the 'higher earning' band would be £98,841 and everyone below this amount would be paying 20%. Someone on £98,841 is effectively losing out on £9714.20 net per year if the bandings had simply moved in line with previous multiples relative to minimum wage. This is one of the reasons why the middle class is being eroded and why there's a cost of living crisis in the UK.
An increase to £13.20p/h equates to a minimum wage of £27,456, based on a 40 hour week. Once you factor in employers NI and basic pension contributions, the MINIMUM cost to hire a 21 year old for a company would be £31,461. This is before you factor in any overarching business costs like office space, laptops, phone, software, training, support staff, vehicles etc. This is going to be devastating to SME's who cant put together a simple 12 month budget without the goalposts being moved & their margins squeezed. It'll also be catastrophic to youngsters opportunities because businesses will simply not be able to afford to hire them. What's also incredible is that anything above £50,270 is seen as 'high earnings' in the UK and is taxed at 40%! We are governed by financially and economically illiterate morons. This will not end well.

This is madness.  The Soho Society has struck again.  It is now… Objecting to the redevelopment of an abandoned building in Soho.  Why?  It could cause “over activation”. Twentieth Century House, right in the middle of London, vacant for 5 years. There’s a plan to bring it back to life: 🏢 Affordable workspace for small businesses. 🛍️ New shops. 🍽️ A courtyard with bars and restaurants replacing an empty alley. 🚶‍♂️‍➡️A public walkway connecting Dean Street to Soho Square. The Soho Society would rather it remain DERELICT.  They hate the idea that people might want to have fun in the capital’s prime nightlife district. We disagree. Westminster councillors have the final say. They should prove they are pro-growth & approve it. What do you think?
