The BBC has announced its policy on AI music. I think it has made the wrong choice for British musicians, and should change course. It says it will allow music created with generative AI, as long as it involves “meaningful human creativity”. That phrase might sound good, but in reality is hard to define, and is likely the start of a slippery slope. Worse, it will further normalise the use of AI music generators that were built by stealing the work of real musicians. Because you can bet those are the ‘tools’ that will be used to make the music the BBC will be playing. One of the BBC's 5 'Public Purposes’ is “to support the creative economy across the United Kingdom”. I worry that this new policy will have the opposite effect. More demand for the products of exploitative generative AI companies; less, inevitably, for musicians. The BBC is a thoughtful organisation. I deeply hope they will reconsider.
