The best parents 💔
On Tuesday afternoon, my parents were involved in a head-on collision with a driver who appears to have swerved into their lane. Tragically, both of them died, my mum on the scene, and my dad a short while later at the hospital.

When Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng was approached about becoming the Economic Freedom Fighters’ mayoral candidate for Johannesburg, her husband was the first person she told. He encouraged her to make herself available, telling her that after years of fighting for other people’s rights around the world, she should bring that fight to the city they called home. That was one of their last conversations before her husband died on 10 July, leaving the 44-year-old medical doctor and human rights activist to navigate the demands of an election campaign while grieving his death and adjusting to life as a single parent.
Our passion and our drive is not matched by processes and resources and infrastructure that works. The EFF’s commitments to insourcing municipal services and expanding access to basic infrastructure with a greater emphasis on how residents participate in decisions affecting their communities; ward-based people’s assemblies, technical oversight teams to scrutinise infrastructure spending and a one-stop municipal service centre where entrepreneurs and informal traders can get help with permits, registration and compliance. We work hard in Johannesburg, but we also come here to play and to dream, and to be creative. And I think it’s very important to not neglect that. #VoteEFF dailymaverick.co.za/article/…

Dead poets society
When someone in the Netherlands dies with nobody to attend the funeral, a poet comes anyway. Since 2002, a rotating group of Dutch poets piece together each stranger's life from whatever is left behind, writing a poem that is read aloud beside the coffin.

People are doing great things for their communities. We have a grandparent who dusted off his karate gear and is teaching kids karate. Another who loves maths spends every day helping children with their maths homework, this is Soweto.

Please do not ask a bookworm if they are going to finish the books they have before buying more. It is very offensive in our culture.

The Oliver Tambo Foundation annual lecture was as many parts energising as it was sobering and reflective. Justice Madlanga was clear, we cannot keep waiting and watching, something drastic needs to be done by us, the people, to turn things around...

On mob violence: I’ll never forget “Eat Him If You Like,” a book by Jean Teulé. In it, he tells the true story of Alain de Monèys, a kind and well-respected nobleman, who falls victim to the vicious and violent whims of a mob of civilians after a misunderstanding.

As the title suggests, some of those involved eventually eat him after a string of extremely violent and horrific tortures have been enacted upon him.

It’s a shameful story in France’s history (one of many, you could say). And methinks that the xenophobic violence we see erupt time and again here in South Africa is one of ours. Devastating.

If you’re out here trying to justify this horror, then I honestly don’t know how to tell you that a mob murdering a man in cold blood is wrong.
A mob of 50 people beating someone to death is barbaric. They should all rot in prison for murder. There must be consequences for killing another human being.
