One thing to remember about dealing with narcissists is that there is no real person within them. They have no unique integrated identity of their own. They only fabricate and assume whatever persona/personality they think is necessary for them to get what they want.

At their very core, narcissists are con artists. They know which manipulative mask to put on to scam people out of their time/money, they know the right words to say and the fake promises to make when they need to future-fake their way into draining their supply of everything.

When narcissists can’t make themselves out to be a “hero” they try to play “poor little victim” using any means necessary to gain a victim card. This might include anything from guilt-trips to attempting to blame their selfish/abusive behavior on everything else but themselves.

If narcissists were ever truly sorry for their horrible behavior, you wouldn’t have to seek them out to get closure. If they actually felt guilt they would seek you out and be able to tell you exactly why they’re apologizing and not just spew a confusing and ambiguous word salad.
