Pro-rata is always earned, never a right. No matter what a piece of paper says (or doesn't say).
To be clear, pro-rata is essential for us early-stage investors. It's how we double and triple down on our breakout winners and concentrate capital to generate massive returns.
We've been fortunate to do it several times at Companyon in our best companies.
But it's on us as GPs to earn pro-rata every round. Past support just doesn't guarantee us a spot today, whether you agree with it or not.
Founders talk. Sometimes publicly. Your reputation and continued value are the real pro-rata.

about 3 years ago, micro1 lost 60% of its revenue overnight and almost went bankrupt.
today, i'm proud to share we've surpassed $1B annual run rate while remaining historically profitable.
it’s been a special journey. we’re grateful for every struggle, moment, and person who has been part of it.
we've taken a very untraditional path to get here. our core team is only ~180 people, spanning 14+ countries, and fully remote.
many of our decisions sacrifice hundreds of millions of revenue and slow us down short term. but we believe they compound into advantages that are impossible to replicate long term.
the long term is now.
these are the 8 principles that made micro1 a leader in the data industry and will soon make us number one:
1.) human 1st AI: treat the tens of thousands of experts helping train models with absolute best-in-class care. our goal is to make AI training one of the largest, highest paying, and most enjoyable job sectors in the world.
2.) U.S. first: we refuse to work with adversarial nations, or export data that improves models against the interests of Americans.
3.) long-term research over short-term ARR: invest in deep research, products, and infrastructure for years from now, not just the next customer pipeline.
4.) proper incentives for intensely hard work: no arbitrary requirements like 996. inspire people to work extremely hard with outlier incentive structures instead of forcing weekend work. we’ve maintained close to 100% core team retention as a result.
5.) stay lean and global: we’ve reached $1B run rate with ~180 people, and intend to slow team growth significantly from here. exceptional talent is found around the world, and pedigree is the wrong thing to over-index on.
6.) execution alignment: company to retain a streamlined board so we can optimize for the next several decades, remain light-weight and dynamic, and take bold & calculated risks.
7.) abundant intelligence improvement: invest in building data generation models to make high-quality datasets and RL environments dramatically less expensive and more abundant.
8.) scale data on realism and horizon: realism brings the complexity of the real world into training models, while horizon extends how long models can work and how much complexity they can handle. both have enormous room to scale, and we’re pushing the limits of both.
additionally: after surpassing $500M run rate this summer, we priced our Series B at a $4B valuation, alongside a ~$25M tender to give our early employees liquidity as we build for the long term. the round was led by Dream Ventures, a longtime supporter and one of our earliest investors, alongside Microsoft, Javelin, Flybridge, G Squared, Up Partners, and LG.
we’re also grateful to be backed by incredible industry leaders, including Guodong Zhang (co-founder of xAI), Andy Fang (CTO of DoorDash), Igor Babuschkin (co-founder of xAI), Behnam Neyshabur (founder of Mirendil), Jerry Tworek (ex-VP of Research at OpenAI), and many more.
data is on its way to becoming the largest industry humanity has ever seen, and we're certain this is just the beginning.
best,
Ali
Founders see the money being raised right now and assume fundraising is easy.
Truth is, that only applies to a small handful of AI startups that are redefining growth.
For everyone else, the bar is higher. More VC money is chasing a smaller set of winners, which means fewer funding options for most startups and lower graduate rates to the next round.
Don't confuse the hype with the broader market.
I wonder how many had Gemini Spark leading the way…super interesting data and also the only I haven’t tried 😂

Crazy to say but in-between writing and publishing, this article is already stale.
Micro1 is actually at $700M RR now.
Another day, another 20-something making a fortune from selling data to AI labs. This time @micro1_ai and @aliansarinik have raised $100m+ at a $4b valuation, after going from $7m ARR -> $500m ARR in 1.5 years. forbes.com/sites/annatong/20…

Update on Micro1:
$200M RR now, +2x from just ~3 months ago.
Will cross ~$1B this year.
$100M round coming together. Sheesh!
On this note, Micro1 (@micro1_ai) is crushing as well.
Gross revenue run-rate:
$8M March
$16M April
$20M May
$34M now
Only raised $6M, strong interest for $30M+ Series A now.
Could not agree more…it’s our #1 criteria
Most founders lose VC deals before the first slide. Before they even enter the room.
Here’s the single line from Chamath’s Groq memo that explains why.
The $10M check into Groq’s $25M valuation Series A — an investment that will return billions through the Nvidia deal.
Most people will stare at the returns.
But the most important line in the memo isn’t financial at all:
“Special Person: Yes”
I’ve been on both sides of the table.
As a founder, I pitched hundreds of VCs.
Now I’ve sat in partner-level investment committee meetings, listening to how real decisions actually get made.
And here’s something that surprised me early on:
A shocking number of IC discussions are not about product, models, or decks.
They boil down to one question:
“Is this founder special?”
I used to press investors on this.
What does special mean?
Pattern match? IQ? Grit? Vision?
No one could give a clean answer.
Not because they were hand-waving — but because “special” isn’t a checklist.
It’s a conviction.
It’s that feeling where, after seeing hundreds of founders a quarter, one person creates a pause in the room, an inevitability.
The partner leans back.
The conversation slows down.
Someone says: “I don’t know how big this gets… but this person will figure something out.”
That’s what “Special Person: Yes” really encodes.
At the earliest stages, most deals are 80–90% team.
And that judgment is formed before the spreadsheet is opened, often before the person even enters the room.
Founders should internalize this:
You don’t need to be special at everything.
But you do need to be world-class at something that matters.
Technical depth others can’t touch.
Insight from living the problem for years.
An execution engine that makes normal timelines look slow.
Or scar tissue from doing the impossible once already.
Investors see hundreds of founders a quarter.
They’re subconsciously asking:
Why you?
Why now?
Why should I bet my reputation on this person?
Sometimes the answer becomes a single quiet line in a memo.
“Special Person: Yes.”
And that one line can be worth billions.
Huge congrats to the @micro1_ai research team for coming out with the intellgience platform! We all know that you’re only as good as your data, and this is a massive step forward for AGI and foundation models everywhere.
Today I’m excited to introduce micro1 Intelligence, the world’s most advanced platform for training frontier AI models.
Achieving AGI is bottlenecked by one main thing: high-quality data.
Data based on real-world environments that capture human expert workflows, complex decision-making, and reward signals models need to learn.
With micro1 Intelligence, frontier labs can train on RL environments across every subject matter all in one place.

I’m excited to announce micro1 has raised a $35M Series A, valuing us at $500M. This round was led by 01A with @adambain joining our board of directors.
We’re grateful to be partnering with leading AI Labs & fortune 10s, such as Microsoft, to train frontier LLMs.
We’re just getting started building the infrastructure layer for AGI, with the ultimate goal of answering the very fundamental question: “where should humanity spend its time?”

Jayson Tatum averaged more points, more rebounds, more steals, more blocks & less turnovers than Paul George.
He also averaged more points, more rebounds, more blocks & had a higher 3pt & FT% than Jimmy Butler.
Leave no doubt next season, @jaytatum0

Jayson Tatum came back from COVID-19 shortly before February and was open about how much it impacted him. His shooting splits in every other month are so much better.
