International demand for palm oil is causing significant forest destruction in Indonesia and Malaysia, which produce 85 % of the world's palm oil. This has harmed endangered species like the Sumatran tiger and created conflicts with local communities over land rights.
In 2023, Indonesia produced 47 million tonnes of crude palm oil, making it the top exporter. However, the country has lost 3 million hectares of natural forest in the last 20 years due to palm oil plantations. #SustainableAgriculture
