A friend came from outside the country to start cattle farming, and I took my time to break down the hard realities and why open grazing was a non-negotiable part of the survival manual.
The moment I mentioned "grazing," Baba just changed am for me.
I told him, "Omo, since your land is massive, just let them move around."
Baba looked at me like I spoke Greek. He shook his head and said no, that intensive, modern zero-grazing system is the standard, they will provide everything right inside the pen.
Itβs just painful that the farm didn't even last a year

Fed Govt has aim over 500,000 hectares of unused land in the universities for commercial agriculture.
You know many universities has crazy land size that are not being used at all... Now Fed Govt through the Mins of Education has said all higher institutions Poly oo, NCE oo and Uni too they will ask them to provide at least 1000 hectares for farming and agribusiness purposes.
Each institution will get 2bn, 10 tractors at reduced cost, seedlings, farm implement, irrigation equipments, fertilizer, water pumps and technical support.
The best part is after they harvest, aggregators will now buy directly from them so they don't have to struggle to sell. Host community, student, unemployed graduates and institution staff will participate under the guidance of lecturers.
This is a beautiful idea and if it is managed properly. It will boom!
Shout out to the people that came up with this distinctive idea and plans.

Know your market and avoid rai so Ng animals that wonβt pay you for your hardwork.
When things were normal in this country, a haul like todayβs would have brought in over β¦2,000,000.
Instead, after loading every single animal onto that vehicle, the total payout came to β¦1,006,000.
A shortfall of over β¦900,000. Just like that. Gone.
That is the painful reality of a business I built with my own blood, sweat, and tears, a business the government didn't contribute a single naira to start, yet seems determined to crush by any means necessary.
Under the previous administration, even when fuel was β¦250/litre, mature pigs fetched β¦2,300/kg and growers went for β¦1,800/kg. Today, with fuel hovering around β¦1,382/litre, prices have inexplicably crashed, mature stock is dumped at β¦1,800/kg and growers at β¦1,500/kg.
Meanwhile, feed costs have exploded. Palm Kernel Cake (PKC) went from β¦99 to β¦240. Every other ingredient has doubled or tripled. Labour costs are through the roof. You are spending significantly more just to keep animals alive, only to sell them for far less than they were worth years ago.
The math doesn't make sense anymore. The hard work doesn't make sense.
I sit here staring at the figures, regretting why I didn't japa when I had the chance. You fight every day to build something locally, to create value, to survive... and the system just swallows you whole.
Sincerely, this country is sitting on a ticking time bomb.
