I have resisted this novel because of all the hype and I am not a fan of novels that use the letter format. However I was captivated by it's charm ,humour and Sybil Van Antwerp is up there with Olive Kitteridge!

Vance boasting that they’ve made English proficiency mandatory, but unfortunately he can’t actually pronounce the word proficiency.
The President of the United States make a parody about the death of a severely mentally ill young British man who lost his life due to his MHI.
America your POTUS is the most disgusting debased vulgar POS ever to have been shat out by your country. Clean up your shit
🚨 Petr Čech: “Roman was forced out. City are being pampered.”
“This is no longer only about a football club. It is about who is protected, and who is not. American owners. Russian owners. Arab owners. Are they treated the same? No.
When Roman was stripped of the club, the line from the FA was that the integrity of the game sits above the interest of any foreign national. That line has changed. This is now interest, and ties.
A supporter of City, dressed up as a fair statement, has arrived from Andy Burnham. That is not his job. Sport has a ministry. Let it work. A political office telling the game how a case should land is not neutral, and it is not small.
The message underneath is obvious. Do not push this club. Do not talk about a sale. We prefer these owners to stay. That is not fair. It is dangerous.
You do not want to lose the partner. Or you want to bend the competition. I do not know which. What I know is that money is now the subject.
A Russian owner was forced to sell and leave, with no FA charge and no Premier League sustainability breach in front of him. City sit on 115. They are being managed, appealed, and spoken for. Burnham backing the ownership is disappointing.
Roman put billions into Chelsea and turned it into a European powerhouse. He was shown the door. City broke the competition. A man convicted, still calling himself innocent because the paperwork was not perfect. That is this case.
The rules that protect every member club should be allowed to run when there is a defaulter. Or some clubs get a privilege. I do not think that is fair.
The delay, the appeals, the political comment — they are all on the table. In my book, City cheated. The outcome will say whether the game still has rules, or only friends.”

At 40, Franz Kafka (1883-1924), who never married and had no children, walked through the park in Berlin when he met a girl who was crying because she had lost her favorite doll. She and Kafka searched for the doll unsuccessfully.
Kafka told her to meet him there the next day and they would come back to look for her.
The next day, when they had not yet found the doll, Kafka gave the girl a letter "written" by the doll saying "please don't cry. I took a trip to see the world. I will write to you about my adventures."
Thus began a story which continued until the end of Kafka's life.
During their meetings, Kafka read the letters of the doll carefully written with adventures and conversations that the girl found adorable.
Finally, Kafka brought back the doll (he bought one) that had returned to Berlin.
"It doesn't look like my doll at all," said the girl.
Kafka handed her another letter in which the doll wrote: "My travels have changed me." the little girl hugged the new doll and brought her happy home.
A year later Kafka died.
Many years later, the now-adult girl found a letter inside the doll. In the tiny letter signed by Kafka it was written:
Everything you love will probably be lost, but in the end, love will return in another way.

Just sitting in a room of my own as dusk descends, with Kuki,a good book, whilst listening to the birds lullabies before they turn in for the night.Bliss.
Just finished this.I adored Sorrow &Bliss ,but this left me underwhelmed. As an ex bookseller and voracious reader I savoured all the references to favourite authors &novels I have championed, but Sophie's story as a sound technician at events was dull& a drag .Sorry Meg.
This ,my 9th Booker longlisted title read, was an unexpected surprise. From the word go it's crisp, spiky Irish dialogue and gangland theme put me in mind of Kin the explosive RTE drama series.I found it a gripping and pacey debut, but I am not convinced it is Booker worthy.
I really enjoyed this-I loved the West London settings-I live there so it was a delight for them to be brought to life on the page. However ,as much as Iadmire her writing,as with others on the longlist ,it doesn't have the heft of a Booker contender.

So Charlie Spencer doesn’t like Prince William? Charlie whose own children don’t like him? Charlie the serial remarrier? Charlie who denied Diana a place to stay? If I were Prince William I’d take that as a compliment. mandatory.com/news/1834227-p…

Never have I been more grateful that Prince William was born first than I am today. Seeing Charles Spencer, Harry and his mentally disturbed wife use Diana’s memory for a fast buck, whilst William retains a dignified silence and respects his mother’s memory. All whilst having endless attacks thrown at him by his brother who he made a pact with never to speak of their mum in public ever again. That betrayal alone should be enough alone for the media to stop trying to force William to forgive H, it’s never going to happen. William is a true warrior and I will always stand with him and his beautiful family.

So f***ing glad Maresca’s true colours are finally coming through so that world football is left in no doubt as to how big a fraud the useless pr*ck has always been.
Won’t be long before Citeh fans realise how damagingly Poundland Pep can drain the life out of a football club.
