📰📰It has been a very busy month for the Campaign Groups. Reports from the National Audit Office, Ofgem consultations on Sea Link and LionLink, and the Public Accounts Committee inquiry have all raised significant questions about the planning, costs and value for money of the Great Grid Upgrade and other energy infrastructure. On top of this, the Secretary of State (SoS) has made three requests for further information on Sea Link. SEAS is preparing its response, due by 22 October, to National Grid’s brief answers to the SoS’s questions. Many important issues continue to remain unresolved, including: 🔸️ No completed Benhall bridge survey confirming whether it can accommodate the proposed heavy vehicles. 🔸️No like-for-like comparison of Sea Link with the alternative proposed by SEAS. 🔸️No confirmed solution to the harmonics problem, or clarity on whether additional network infrastructure will be needed. 🔸️No confirmation that Sea Link can reliably deliver its intended 2GW capacity under the relevant operating conditions. 🔸️No clear explanation of the substantial increase in project costs. And these are just some of the outstanding questions. Given their number and significance, how can the Secretary of State reach a properly informed decision by 31 October? SEAS has therefore requested an extension to allow adequate time for the outstanding matters to be considered. 📰📰

📰📰𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗦 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗔𝗟𝗟 (Walberswick Against LionLink) 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗢𝗳𝗴𝗲𝗺'𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗮 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝟵𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿. Although our starting points differ, the two submissions proved highly complementary, combining detailed regulatory scrutiny with a wider strategic and cumulative assessment of the project. SEAS: the consumer and value-for-money case SEAS questions whether Ofgem can justify committing consumers to £𝟮.𝟴𝟵𝗯𝗻 £𝟯.𝟮𝗯𝗻 for Sea Link when questions remain over Sea Link’s need, cost, technical operation and value for money. It challenges the £𝟭.𝟭𝗯𝗻–£𝟭.𝟰𝗯𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁-𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀, arguing that network changes, including the relocation of Nautilus, need to be reflected. It also highlights Ofgem’s acknowledgement that the project does not fully resolve the 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲. SEAS points to the 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 evidenced during the DCO examination and questions the funding arrangements, including early construction funding, contingency and cost reopeners, 𝗪𝗔𝗟𝗟: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝘂𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. WALL draws on its experience of 𝗦𝗲𝗮 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗸, but takes a wider view, questioning Sea Link’s cost, deliverability and incremental benefits, as well as cumulative impacts alongside 𝗦𝗶𝘇𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗖, 𝗘𝗔𝟭, 𝗘𝗔𝟮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗦𝗜𝗣𝘀. WALL also highlights the wider question of whether the 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗨𝗽𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆, drawing on the National Audit Office’s concerns about oversight, monitoring and regulatory scrutiny. And this is only part of the picture. It doesn’t even show the full extent of the devastation on the ground. Locals are experiencing the endless road closures and restrictions daily. Now consider the bigger picture. With so many energy projects earmarked within a six-mile radius of Sizewell, we have to ask: 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙢𝙪𝙘𝙝 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙎𝙪𝙛𝙛𝙤𝙡𝙠’𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙮𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚, 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙖𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙚? 📰📰 𝗔 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧 𝗕𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗛 𝗚𝗥𝗜𝗗 - 𝗚𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗘𝗧𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞 𝗥𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 📰📰 Andy Burnham’s announcement of a new Great British Grid puts an important issue firmly on the national agenda: Britain needs a smarter, more strategic approach to electricity infrastructure. The key question is not whether we need clean energy - we absolutely do. It is how we connect that energy in a way that delivers value for consumers while protecting communities, landscapes and our natural environment. SEAS has consistently argued for a more integrated approach, including offshore grid connections and greater use of existing infrastructure and brownfield locations where appropriate. A genuinely strategic Great British Grid could provide an opportunity to look beyond individual projects and consider the network as a whole — reducing unnecessary infrastructure, improving resilience and ensuring that investment delivers maximum benefit. Scottish Power Renewables has sent out an email of upcoming construction activities associated with the East Anglia TWO (EA2) and East Anglia ONE North (EA1N) offshore windfarm projects, which will take place during October 2026. These works are to do with the ongoing development of the projects' underground cable route and associated access points, and permanent access road to the substation in Friston.
