The #NorthernWritersAwards were so inspiring last night; not only because of all the amazing creatives and fellow writers in the room, but also what NWN is doing for young people in the north. So so honored (and in disbelief) at being chosen and excited for what’s to come.
.@SEA_Clarke wins a Hachette Children's Novel Award! "I'm so passionate about representing the North – as well as including characters from working class backgrounds – within my fiction, so receiving an award from NWN feels emblematic of that." #NorthernWritersAwards

Adored this episode. So much resonated, from Northernness to the feeling of not fitting in as a class chameleon. Well worth a listen!

The Assad regime will go down in history as one of the ugliest, bloodiest and most brutal regimes ever known. The post-Assad era is unknown. Everything is possible. But this is a truly historic moment of freedom that is worth celebrating, big time, regardless of what comes next

If novelists can learn anything at all from musicals, it’s how to nail the midpoint. And yes, I did just watch #Wicked again.

Well, I had my reservations about the Wicked film (because I love the musical so bloody much)…. Turns out it’s epic.

So, I always thought that the prologue of the cinematic masterpiece that is Jurassic Park (not being sarcastic btw) was a bit of gruesome foreshadowing, but I’ve just realised it’s the inciting incident (alongside the escaping dinos, of course) 🤯 Proof that prologues can work…

I don't believe there's such any thing as good reading and bad reading. It's all reading, and it's all good! If we want kids to be readers, we have to respect their rights as readers. Let reading be a pleasure, and they'll be readers forever! #literacy (Art: Quentin Blake)

It was so lovely pretending I know what I'm talking about with @JenBowden12 on the #NorthernVoices podcast yesterday. We chatted about Northern writing, blending humour with dark themes and my experience winning the @NewWritingNorth @HachetteKids Novel Award. Thanks, Jen!

Part of the solution to this is to end the snobbery around what children ‘should’ and ‘shouldn’t’ be reading… if a teenager decides to read Diary of a Wimpy Kid in their library lesson, let them! Don’t judge them. 🧵

Oh, and someone publish more funny books, please. Children’s animated films and shows for tweens are hilarious (for both children and adults), so why aren’t their books? (Or, should I say, why aren’t MORE of their books?)

And don’t get me started on the jump from MG to YA. The Tween space is in desperate need of its own shelf space. We can’t expect 12-14 year olds to enjoy reading when there’s nothing for them to choose from.

Instead of expressing "concern" about the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, isn't it time we stopped supplying Israel with the weapons that have caused the catastrophe in the first place?
