You will say something or give people advice, and someone will come up with, "Life doesn't have a formula. Just do you."
Yesterday, I made a post about things people should know before turning 30, and I saw comments like this. It got me thinking about how some people have misunderstood the idea of living life on their own terms.
The truth is, life requires discipline, principles and some level of structure if you want to make meaningful progress. Nobody is saying there is one universal formula that guarantees success or that everyone must follow the same path. But the fact that life doesn't have a guaranteed formula doesn't mean you should live without direction.
Let me give you a simple example. There are established rules and procedures for driving a car. You learn to use your seat belt, obey traffic signs, observe speed limits and pay attention to other road users. Does following these rules mean you can never have an accident? Absolutely not. But does that mean we should tell people to drive anyhow because accidents can still happen? Of course not. Following those rules reduces your chances of getting into an accident and makes you a more responsible driver.
This is exactly how I see life. You can advise people to live healthily, exercise, eat properly and take care of their bodies, and someone will tell you life has no formula. You can tell young people the things they should understand before turning 30, and someone will remind you that everyone has their own timeline.
Of course, people have different circumstances, opportunities and experiences. What works for one person may not work for another. But there are certain principles that remain useful regardless of your circumstances. Discipline, financial responsibility, emotional intelligence, good judgement, self-control and the ability to think long-term will always put you in a better position to navigate life.
