Going to GEDfest tonight. Never met Gord, but we're of the same generation and I miss him still.
On this day in 2017, Gord Downie died.
Born in 1964, he was the singer and lyricist for The Tragically Hip from 1984 until his death.
Considered a Canadian icon, he was involved in environmental and Indigenous activism later in life.

ALT Gord Downie in a recording studio setting. Downie, bald with a trimmed beard, gazes thoughtfully at the camera while seated and playing an acoustic guitar, his hands on the fretboard and strings. He wears a light-colored T-shirt under a fringed denim jacket, with a large condenser microphone on a stand positioned in front of him. The background features a blurred array of studio equipment, cables, and draped fabrics
This is MAJOR news! Canada is stepping up to provide a resilient economy in light of geoeconomic threats. Bravo!

I'm always conscious of client service in my practice.
So I'm at a local @ServiceOntario to help my 15 year old daughter (mostly non verbal with ASD and OCD) get her health card renewed. There was a sign offering to help people with special needs and wheelchair signs in multiple areas.
I use the kiosk to get a ticket and chose accessibility need and health card services and sit down.
That was 50+ minutes ago.
We'll probably wait another 15-30 minutes.
Shouldn't someone here get notified that we could use faster service?
Do they know there are other forms of disability besides physical?
Is this the first time they're reading this?

FOX News: Dozens of ships bound for “Lake America” have piled up at the entrance to the Welland Canal. Canada is refusing to grant them permission to proceed. Ships that list “Lake Ontario” in their documents are passing through the canal without obstruction.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
No claims of ships bound for "Lake America" being blocked at the Welland Canal appear in any FOX News reporting or official records. The referenced name change is a US federal proposal with no effect on Canadian canal operations or shipping.

Trump is trying to boost the U.S. economy by making it harder for Americans to trade with the rest of the world.
He is also promising to destroy Iran's economy by making it harder for Iranians to trade with the rest of the world.
I remember that 1994 quote. I still marvel at how cavalier people are about the Americans having an accumulated debt of $40 trillion. There are no fiscal conservatives left anywhere.
Congratulations, @brucesellery!

The Season's of an Advisors' Life.
substack.com/home/post/p-210…
Ten years ago, a landmark paper was published showing mutual fund advisors had "misguided beliefs". A decade later, nothing has been done to disabuse advisors of these "beliefs". A massive regulatory failure.
Beliefs are what we think is true. Truth is what remains true whether we believe it or not.
Most people inherit their beliefs from colleagues, experts, family, friends, social media, and popular opinion without ever questioning them.
Independent thinkers do the opposite. They ask questions, challenge assumptions, and stay curious about what might be true. That requires humility. The crowd can be wrong, but so can you. The goal isn't to win arguments. It's to learn.
Challenging accepted ideas can be uncomfortable, but progress often starts with someone willing to question what others take for granted.
First understand what is. Then imagine what could be. Then decide what should be.
What belief do you hold today simply because you've never stopped to question it?
Pick one assumption this week and challenge it. You may discover that your strongest conviction is either truer, or less true, than you think.
I was at a firm that was owned by CI in 2004 (when this happened). I told management I was appalled by the firm's behaviour and that I would never use the firm's products again.

Now that the war in the Middle East is unequivocally on again, so is the threat of stagflation, IMO.

The ratio of the US Stock Market’s Value to GDP (aka the “Buffett Indicator") has moved up to a new record high at 234%. That’s now more than 3 standard deviations above the long-term historical average.
Love this! My only ask is to distinguish between optimism (almost always a great trait) and optimism bias (a potentially debilitating blind spot).
Psychologist and Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman on optimism, in Thinking, Fast and Slow:
"If you are allowed one wish for your child, seriously consider wishing him or her optimism. Optimists are normally cheerful and happy, and therefore popular; they are resilient in adapting to failures and hardships, their chances of clinical depression are reduced, their immune system is stronger, they take better care of their health, they feel healthier than others and are in fact likely to live longer. Optimistic individuals play a disproportionate role in shaping our lives. Their decisions make a difference; they are the inventors, the entrepreneurs, the political and military leaders – not average people. They got to where they are by seeking challenges and taking risks. They are talented, and they have been lucky, almost certainly luckier than they acknowledge...the people who have the greatest influence on the lives of others are likely to be optimistic and overconfident, and to take more risks than they realize."

18 years ago this week, we lost George Carlin.
I can't even imagine what he would be saying about the world we're living in now.
He'd be so angry. And funny. And tell the truth. Like he always did.
