A lovely visit from a great organisation!
WFA South of Scotland Branch - Summer Event 12 Aug 2025. An excursion to RAF Kirknewton for an in-depth tour of "Sophie" - East Lothian's fantastic new Sopwith 1 1⁄2 Strutter. Sincere thanks to our friends at the Aviation Preservation Society of Scotland (APSS). @STRUTTERTHEREP

Gerard Lohan from the Aviation Preservation Society of Scotland (APSS) delivering a terrific presentation on Sunday 6 April: "Sophie - the story of East Lothian's new Sopwith 1½ Strutter". Gerard not only recounted the story of Sophie, but placed her in the wider context of WW1.

If you want to know more about "Sophie", Gerard Lohan from the Aviation Preservation Society of Scotland (APSS) will be speaking at the Western Front Association in Edinburgh on Sunday afternoon, 6th April 2025. See other posts for further details.
This is what it's all about. Sophie is not just the only full-sized flying WW1 fighter in Scotland, she's also a magnet and a gateway for young folk interested in STEM subjects. Two placements from George Watson's learning from Sophie's pilot, Tim. The APSS are good at this!

The Old Girl looks pretty decent on the front page. Good article.
In today's Sunday Post an in-depth story about the APSS @STRUTTERTHEREP What a scorned opportunity by the Museum of Flight.

Seem to be getting lots of coverage. Well, it IS a good story and provided we can find somewhere to fly her in East Lothian, that story will grow.

So...she can't take off and land in the county she defended?!

This is well worth 5 mins of your time. A truly wonderful achievement. A Sopwith 1½ Strutter built from scratch by a group of retired gentlemen in Scotland. I know what they have been through - and now it's taken to the skies. Oh, must be a speck of dust in my eye. But what next?
Well, that great day has come and we are obviously floating on a cloud of quiet satisfaction. What an achievement! But it's all just the beginning of the next step. Houston, there's a slight problem. Watch this and send us your thoughts...youtu.be/wMwqqLBXfE4
