Did you know that routine parenting moments can be filled with connection and joy? Take nappy changes – use this time to connect through eye contact, playful smiles, and gentle words. These seemingly small moments become memories that weave a strong bond.

Young children don’t always have the words or understanding to say what they are thinking or feeling, so they communicate through actions or behaviour. Connecting by talking & listening with them as often as we can - including about feelings and emotions - is so important. #PSED

“Night-night!”
Take a peek at this masterful little communicator. She technically says only one thing… but manages to carry on an entire conversation filled with intent and meaning.
Last week I wrote a little about receptive language (the ability to understand words spoken to you) as a precursor to expressive (or spoken) language. It’s clear that this little one is about to explode into the latter.
And check out all the heavy lifting that “night-night” does here… meaning at least three different things as the conversation progresses.
First it means, “Hey, I really need to go to sleep now. Will you please put me to bed?” (Which, by the way, is incredibly self aware at her age.)
Next it means, “Yes, that’s correct. I need to go night-night.”
Finally it means, “Goodnight! See you when I wake up.”
All of these different meanings are reinforced by her body language, nods, and tone of voice.
Such a cool exchange - and window on her budding language development.

Calm your mind before bed: If your mind is racing as you lie in bed, write down your worries or your to-do list for the next day, so that your mind can let go of these thoughts for a few hours while you sleep.

Is there anything better than a baby’s laughter?
Dad has this little one in stitches as he… plants cucumbers?
What’s so funny about that? 🤔
The answer has a lot to do with baby’s expectations. Young children have strong reactions to the unexpected.
When something surprising occurs they first assess the risk. If they perceive danger then tears are likely.
But what if something isn’t dangerous… it’s just plain weird? Think about this one from baby’s growing perspective.
At home, daddy isn’t known for throwing things on the ground. In fact, just the opposite. When something falls on the floor, he’s always quick to pick it up.
So when he starts suddenly - and repeatedly - throwing cucumber plants on the ground… now THAT’s funny.
For babies, safe + unexpected = comedy gold.

The breast milk of a First Lady has the same nutritional content as that of a poor village woman.
Nature made it so, so that all babies can be given a good start to a healthy life with breastmilk for at least the first 6 months of life.
Don't deprive your child of your milk.

“If they're homeschooled, how will they learn to socialize with other kids?”
Let’s walk through the type of “socialization” kids get at government schools.
- They sit in the same room all day with kids their own age
- They are dictated to by a teacher for most of the day
- They have to ask for permission to go to the bathroom
- Except for short breaks, they only get to talk to others in a controlled environment
- They have a higher chance of experiencing physical violence than at any other time in their life
This type of “socialization” is overrated. It looks nothing like real life. It will never be replicated again unless they go to prison.
Worse, it transfers influence from the parents to peers and hired professionals.
No thanks.
If you have an older boy ready to fight and survive in a hostile environment, public school can provide that testing ground for him. But don’t call it socialization.
The idea of sticking kids into a classroom for 6 hours per day with kids their own age is still relatively new.
While you don’t want to insulate your children, homeschooling can provide a much better environment for what people call socialization and you don’t have to try very hard or be very creative.
- Siblings
- Grandparents
- Co-ops
- Churches
- Sports leagues
- Public parks
- Neighborhood kids
- Charity work
And much more. It’s called life. Have your kids order their own food at restaurants and be polite to the waiter, and that will go a long way as well.
Homeschooling doesn’t work for everyone, but it can work for a whole lot more people than you think.

Parents of babies, this one's for you: Next time you're outdoors, sprinkle water on your baby's toes, feet, legs, etc. Watch how they react & respond. Let them know with your words where you'll sprinkle the water next & name each body part as you go.
It builds language skills!
