Yesterday, the so-called Polisario representative in New York, who falsely claims to represent the separatist movement at the United Nations, blocked me just as I was challenging him to stop perpetuating the myth of the existence of a distinct, fully fledged “Sahrawi people.”
But which Sahrawi people are these individuals talking about? Do they mean the people of Saguia el-Hamra and Oued Eddahab, most of whom live in Morocco in peace and prosperity? Or are they referring to Sahrawis belonging to the eastern Rguibat tribes, who originate from Tindouf itself? Perhaps they mean some people from Tan-Tan and Guelmim, territories that are not disputed, some of whom have joined the Polisario Front and become residents of the camps? Or are they referring to the Sahrawis of Mauritania?
Amid all the noise and propaganda propagated for decades by self-righteous leftists, sections of the Spanish media, political and intellectual elites, and their Algerian allies, one fundamental fact has been obscured: the Sahara is a geographical region, and the term “Sahrawi,” in its broad geographical sense, refers to people inhabiting that region.
During a hearing before the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Spanish Parliament in March 1976, Spain's ambassador to Morocco during the Green March denounced the hypocrisy and cynicism of his country's politicians, academics, and opinion-makers, most of whom supported the separatist movement. He argued that if they were genuinely committed to defending the Sahrawi people and speaking on their behalf, they should also acknowledge the Sahrawis living in Mauritania, other parts of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya.
Fast-forward to 2026. As I explained in my book published in 2024, Algeria's geopolitical ambitions to establish a satellite state in southern Morocco suffered a decisive setback when the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1754 in April 2007.
Since then, successive Security Council resolutions have tacitly endorsed Morocco's autonomy proposal as the most feasible path toward a political settlement. International support for Morocco's position continued to gather momentum, culminating in the adoption of Resolution 2797 in October 2025.
That resolution marked a turning point by placing the Moroccan autonomy proposal at the center of negotiations aimed at reaching a political solution. We are now on the verge of another resolution that will make what has long been an open secret even more explicit, namely, that Morocco's autonomy proposal, within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, is the only realistic path toward a lasting political settlement.
The games are over. The moment of truth has arrived, and those who have championed the separatist cause must come to terms with the changing diplomatic and geopolitical realities.
And now, as that moment approaches, a census of the residents of the Tindouf camps will help establish who has a legitimate claim to return to the Sahara and expose the fraudsters who have deceived the international community for five decades.
