I remember going to a gas station and waiting in line for hours for gasoline that, of course, had shot up in price because of a region of the world made up of countries whose names I couldn't even pronounce.

🇩🇰Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that 🇫🇮Finnish President Alexander Stubb and 🇳🇴Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store had gone “solo” by calling Vladimir Putin.
Is the action by Finland and Norway:
A) Practical and useful diplomacy;
B) Appeasement / normalisation of the Kremlin’s behaviour, influencing the global optics on Russia;

During a visit to 🇸🇬Singapore, 🇩🇪German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said 🇪🇺Europe and Germany want to increase “free trade with open competition, reliability and a rules-based order”.
Merz also encouraged the “middle powers in Asia to assert their interests”.
Is that the German encouragement of the “poison shrimp” among Asian countries vis-à-vis 🇨🇳China:
A) Yes;
B) No?

A metaphor by 🇸🇬Singapore’s founding PM Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) was first made in 1966: “a big fish will eat a smaller fish, and the smaller fish will eat the shrimp”. LKY suggested the city-state needed to build up its defense mechanisms “like a shrimp that stings - when it is left alone with predators”.
60 years later 🇬🇧UK’s ex-PM Rishi Sunak used the LKY methaphor, suggesting that the so-called “middle powers can’t operate at the scale of the big ones but what they can do is make themselves indispensable”.
Sunak urged middle powers to become a “poisonous shrimp” to carve out strategic economic leverage in a more turbulent global environment.
The approach reflects a more transactional view of economic security, where access to essential technologies can help smaller nations preserve their autonomy and secure a place in negotiations with larger powers.
As competition between major economies reshapes global supply chains, the survival and prosperity for middle powers may depend on becoming a “choke point” that other countries can’t do without.
The strategy does not require dominating an entire industry but controlling a critical part of it.
Which countries can this strategy be applicable to, apart from the Far-East Asian hubs for logistics, finance and microprocessors, like 🇸🇬Singapore or 🇹🇼Taiwan?

🇪🇺🇺🇦 EU leaders differ in their assessments of the conversation between their Finnish and Norwegian colleagues and Putin, - Radio Liberty
🇵🇱 Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that the impression of the European side was "very cautiously optimistic" about the possibility of constructive talks in Abu Dhabi in November.
🇩🇰 Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen criticized the initiative, saying that it was not coordinated with other European leaders.
"I see no signs that Russia wants peace with Europe. […] I believe that we should preserve the unity of Europe, and not act alone," she said.
🇸🇪 Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also expressed doubts about Moscow's intentions:
"In my opinion, everyone wants peace, except Putin himself. […] They seek submission."
🇫🇮 Finnish President Alexander Stubb explained that the conversation with Putin lasted about an hour and a half. According to him, Finland and Norway wanted to directly convey to the Russian leader their signals regarding the war against Ukraine.
🇳🇴 Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized that they did not speak on behalf of all of Europe, but represented their countries. According to him, the allies were informed about the conversation in advance.
🇷🇸 State media in Serbia began to “tear off the masks” of propaganda after the fall of the long-standing Vučić regime — the host of the local TV channel apologized to the audience live for years of distortion of information.
A similar situation in the media space occurred in Hungary after Orbán’s defeat.
🇫🇮🇳🇴🇺🇦 The call of the President of Finland and the Prime Minister of Norway to Putin was coordinated with us, and this is the right approach, — Ukrainian Foreign Minister Sybiha.
🔹We have realistic proposals and solutions. We are ready for a partial ceasefire and a complete cessation of hostilities;
🔹The peace negotiation process must be fair. We will not take any unilateral steps;
🔹Putin is currently not showing any real willingness to end the war. That is why strengthening Ukraine remains extremely important;
🔹Finland and Norway, as well as Denmark, Iceland and Sweden, are showing real leadership in strengthening Ukraine. Since February 2022, the five Nordic countries have provided assistance worth about $50 billion;
🔹Our experience, technology and strength can make the Nordic countries safer. We are ready to contribute.

🇳🇱The Dutch government plans to cut 25,000 jobs in AI-led overhaul, targeting an efficiency drive to make the central administration smaller, smarter, and simpler.
The plan is phase out roughly 16% of the central government’s total workforce of around 160,000 over the coming years leading up to 2035.
The plan targets savings of €900 million per year by 2027, rising to €3.5 billion annually from 2035.
Thw cuts will be supported by an AI-led efficiency drive and administrative overhauls to boost productivity. Detailed action plans and targets for deploying AI will be presented by the cabinet in the first quarter of 2027.
Police and defense personnel are exempt from the reductions, meaning the impact will be concentrated primarily within ministries, inspectorates, and various implementing agencies.
The Dutch strategy also involves simplifying rules - aiming to cut 500 rules a year - and selling off surplus government buildings.
Are the Dutch the first in the Western world to take seriously the potential impact of AI on the public sector governance:
A) Yes;
B) No?
🇦🇿 Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev:
We emerged victorious from the war, our cause was just, and after the enemy capitulated, we did not go any further. We stopped, and we offered peace.
I believe this experience should be examined, and the parties involved in wars should study it.
Perhaps it could help them bring their wars to an end.
🇺🇸❗️Behind US President Donald Trump’s turn towards Russia are promises of lucrative deals from Kirill Dmitriev, - Le Monde
A journalistic source present at the talks on October 9 said that on that day, Witkoff preferred to talk about business.
Budanov was stunned by the project, which would make Kyiv dependent on Moscow. “Our model is not Belarus, but Poland!”, he objected.
The interlocutor close to President Zelensky, added that negotiating with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner is now “hopeless, they only think about business.”
At the same time, the Ukrainian delegation noticed that the new theses of Trump and his negotiators are strikingly similar to what Dmitriev constantly says.
Dmitriev plans to invite representatives of the Alternative for Germany to an economic forum in Moscow in December.
🇰🇷❗️🇺🇦 South Korean Foreign Minister stated during a parliamentary audit that eight diplomatic personnel had been withdrawn from the embassy in Ukraine (Kyiv).
He noted that the withdrawal was unavoidable due to Kyiv’s failure to adequately address the dispute and that essential staff remain in place to maintain contact and protect South Korean nationals.

🇪🇺🇺🇦 EU leaders aim to reach an agreement on a support package for Ukraine worth approximately €45 billion by the end of this year, - Politico.
A potential loan, guaranteed by the current EU budget, has emerged in recent weeks as the most likely scenario for meeting Ukraine's financial needs in 2027.
An EU diplomat argues that the bloc needs to find a way to finance Ukraine and ensure funding for the cohesion funds on which many EU countries depend.
The exact structure of a potential new loan for Ukraine will be discussed at the leaders' meeting on November 26.

🇮🇱As voters head to the polls in Israel today, final forecasts and opinion trends indicate a profound political shift and a highly anticipated coalition deadlock. Mainstream tracking and market data indicate that neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s governing right-wing coalition nor the main opposition bloc is projected to secure the definitive 61-seat Knesset majority required to form a government outright.
A breakdown of predictions from leading forecasting platforms, polling aggregators, and betting markets outlines the expectations for the vote:
• Poliwave seat projection: models a neck-and-neck tie for the top spot, predicting 24 seats for Likud (Netanyahu) and 24 seats for Yashar (Gadi Eisenkot);
Naftali Bennett’s Together Party follows with a projected 12 seats, and Yair Golan’s The Democrats at 9 seats;
• PolitPro aggregated election trend places the incumbent Likud at 18.7% of the vote intention and the newly surged Yashar at 17.0%;
• Major Israeli Broadcasters (Channels 11, 12, & 13 Consolidated) project Netanyahu’s bloc to capture roughly 50 seats, while the main opposition bloc led by Eisenkot is tracking toward 54 seats, leaving both sides short of the 61-seat threshold;
• Polymarket strongly favours a shift in leadership; Gadi Eisenkot’s probability of becoming the next prime minister stands at 58%, compared to Benjamin Netanyahu’s 27%.
Key variables & potential “Kingmakers”:
• Arab-led parties are projected to capture a combined 16 seats: the Alhurra network reports that Mansour Abbas, leader of the Ra’am party, has publicly stated an intent to replace Netanyahu, while the Joint List has signaled a willingness to conditionally support an opposition government from the outside.
A core campaign issue driving secular swing voters toward the opposition is the ongoing controversy regarding ultra-Orthodox military exemptions, an arrangement Netanyahu has defended to preserve his alliance with religious factions.
What is Israel looking at post-election:
A) Quick and smooth transition to a new coalition government led by Eisenkot;
B) Long post-election cattle trading, leaving in the country in a political limbo for months;
C) Netanyahu retaining power;
D) Other?
🇫🇮🇺🇦🇳🇴 Consultations with Ukraine were held in preparation for Putin's call, — Stubb's office
🇱🇹 Meanwhile, Lithuanian President considers negotiations with Russia without representatives from Kyiv or European states dangerous.
"Such formats are very dangerous. First of all, it's unacceptable that Europe isn't participating in these negotiations, that Ukraine isn't even invited to such meetings. It's truly unacceptable when the affairs of a sovereign state are discussed behind its back."
🇵🇱🇺🇸🇺🇦 Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski:
The United States has now adopted a strategy of ending the war on whatever terms are necessary, so that it can return to economic cooperation.
But you can end any war by surrendering.
So the terms matter.
🤔 Donald Trump Jr. traveled with Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev to hunt in Mongolia, — FT.
The son of the US president arrived in the country in late August, accompanied by the US Secret Service and Republican donor Kevin Small. Kremlev later flew to him from Kazakhstan with oligarch Artur Martirosov.
They avoided joint photos, although the organizers of Trump's son's trip appeared in Kremlev's video.
At the end of the visit, Trump Jr. met with the president of Mongolia, but the post about this was later deleted, calling the conversation unofficial.
Earlier it became known that Kremlev secretly financed Trump Jr.'s wedding in the Bahamas for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

🇻🇪Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez - in her position since the removal of the Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in January 2026 - stated that the opposition leader María Corina Machado must show “regret, remorse and a change of course” following her return to the country from months in exile.
Rodríguez rejected what she termed a “show” or spectacle surrounding Machado’s arrival, and denied that the opposition faces political persecution.
Following months in exile - which included a clandestine escape from Venezuela and accepting the Nobel Peace Prize in Norway in December 2025 - Machado returned to jubilant crowds of thousands demanding new elections.
Following the 🇺🇸US military capture of Maduro, his longtime ally Delcy Rodríguez took over as acting president with the blessing of the Trump administration. Though initially supposed to serve a 90-day transitional term, Rodríguez has remained in office, and has not yet called for a new vote.
Rodríguez has granted Washington access to massive Venezuelan crude reserves and signed major extraction agreements with foreign firms.
US President Donald Trump publicly acknowledged that US is “doing really well in Venezuela” under the current political and contractual arrangements.
Machado and her party, Vente Venezuela, are actively pushing for a firm presidential election date for 2027 and demanding that she be permitted to legally run on the ballot.
Is Machado’s return a risk to the fresh US interests and arrangements in post-Maduro Venezuela:
A) Yes;
B) No?

More details are emerging of the secretive 🇺🇸US-🇻🇪Venezuela oil deal announced by Donald Trump last week, as some doubts by the industry experts still remain unanswered about It being “workable” in practice.
The actual control of 17 Venezuelan oilfields previously controlled by 5 🇨🇳Chinese companies and 1 Russian firm will most likely go to a private US-based company, North American Blue Energy Partners (NABEP).
NABEP’s beneficiary is Alejandro Betancourt, 46, who’s life story has an oil-like boom-and-bust aura, replete with international intrigue, which includes:
- assistance to Donald Trump during his first term in getting kompromat on Joe Biden;
- 10 years’ old money-laundering probe, as a result of which his 🇪🇸Spanish castle had been raided upon 🇨🇭Swiss search and arrest warrants;
- inability to travel freely outside his permanent home in 🇬🇧UK until June 2026, when the Swiss authorities dropped their probe.
Betancourt was an instrumental figure and a go-between in helping US oust and capture Venezuelan President Maduro, according to various sources.
The handshake agreement between US and Venezuelan governments on the one side, and and Betancourt on the other side, appears to include:
• Venezuela receives between 16% to 40% of production, depending on the field; it also gets income taxes;
• US puts no money into the deal, has a 35% equity stake and gets 20% of the after-tax oil at production cost; that’s about $30 a barrel (crude was priced at $90 Monday);
• Betancourt's NABEP gets access to 17 fields and the implied backing of the US military;
“No other oilman can say he has the Pentagon on his side," according to one US official.
It looks like Betancourt is now well placed for a payback for the risks taken.
It remains to be seen how the US - or Venezuelan - national interest will benefit in the process …

Microsoft is asking 60,000 employees to quit voluntarily.
The company has launched a Voluntary Exit Offer, making 60,000 employees eligible for “voluntary buyouts”. The massive initiative represents about 27% of Microsoft’s global workforce of 223,000.
The company is implementing this program to trim costs and reallocate resource budgets for its $190 billion AI capital expenditure push.
Staff at Level 70 and below (including positions up to the Vice President level) are eligible across 4 countries: 🇺🇸US, 🇨🇦Canada, 🇮🇳India, and 🇬🇧UK. Unlike previous plans, eligibility is not restricted by age or years of service.
Key affected units include AI Experiences, Copilot, Windows + Devices, Xbox, Finance, and Human Resources.
Employees working in Data Centres, Sales, Marketing, and Security are excluded from the offer.
Eligible employees have until early December 2026 to make a decision, with participating workers officially exiting the company on 32 December 2026.
While Microsoft has not detailed the exact package for this specific wave, it noted the packages are similar to standard severance. Past severance packages at the company ranged from 8 to 39 weeks of base pay depending on internal level and tenure.
This is Microsoft’s second major voluntary reduction program of 2026. In April, the company rolled out a Voluntary Retirement Program targeting 9,000 US workers, which saw a 30% adoption rate and reduced the need for forced layoffs earlier in the year.
Management at Microsoft anticipates a much lower take-rate for this current offer since it targets a broader pool of standard tech workers rather than retirement-ready staff.
This year alone Oracle cut 20% of its workforce, Intel 15%, Meta 10%, Uber 10%. Amazon and Google underwent much smaller cuts.
Is the Big Tech pivot from the human workforce to the AI Infrastructure paying off:
A) Yes;
B) No?

🇺🇸🇮🇷 Bessent on Iran:
My advice to the Iranian people would be: Don't pay your taxes because you're not going to get anything back from the government.
The other thing that I would tell the Iranian people is, anything you need for the winter, you should go and get now.
You should start stocking up on heating fuel. There's going to be a big heating fuel shortage.
In terms of gasoline, everyone should fill up their tanks now.
🇺🇦 Ukraine can cover only a third of state expenditures with its own revenues, — PM Koretsky
The country's total expenditures in 2026 will amount to about $200 billion. Of these, $155 billion is for war, and the remaining $45 billion is for medicine, education, social needs and other expenditures.
💬 So, the total of all revenues, all, without exception, Ukraine's revenues — $70 billion. So, only 1/3 can be covered by Ukraine's own resources💬, — Koretsky noted.
The state is forced to attract the rest of the funds through international partners. The Prime Minister emphasized that without this support, it is impossible to ensure the country's defense capability and stability.
