Every Sunday, 28-year-old Ethan called his mother at exactly 7 p.m.
Even after she died, he kept calling her number.
He would listen to her old voicemails, sometimes laughing, sometimes crying.
His friends told him to move on.
But how do you move on from the only person who loved you before the world knew your name?

He met her on the third day.
She was walking a small white dog along the promenade, the way people do when they want to look occupied. He watched her for a while before he spoke. She answered as if she had been waiting for someone to interrupt her.
They had coffee. Then another. By the fifth evening she was sitting on the edge of his hotel bed in the dark, still wearing her coat, the dog asleep on the floor between their shoes. She told him she was married. He said he was too. Neither of them moved.

My older brother asked me to be the best man at his wedding, then uninvited me 4 days before.
The reason? My wife is pregnant and he said my wife's "drama" would stress out his fiancée.
My wife has zero drama. What she has is severe morning sickness that makes her need to sit down often. His fiancée apparently told him she didn't want "someone throwing up in the bathroom all day at my wedding."
I was his best man since we were kids. I helped him pick the ring. I paid for his bachelor party.
I called him and said, "So you're choosing her insecurities over your brother?"
He said,
Passenger: “You canceled my connecting flight, and now you’re telling me I have to pay $460 to get home?”
Airline Agent: “Your first flight arrived late, and the next available seat is on tomorrow’s flight.”
Passenger: “Your first flight arrived 40 minutes late! Your airline sold me both tickets as one trip. How is that my fault?”
Agent: “I’m sorry, sir. There’s nothing I can do.”
The passenger, a father of two, had been traveling home to Dallas after attending his mother’s funeral in Atlanta. He was exhausted, carrying one suitcase, and desperate to get back to his children.
Passenger: “I’ve already spent money on this trip. I can’t afford another hotel night and a new ticket.”
Agent: “You can purchase a new ticket, or you can wait until tomorrow.”
He stepped aside, trying not to lose his temper.
Then he noticed another passenger at the counter holding a boarding pass for the same connecting flight. Her flight had also been delayed, but an agent had already arranged a replacement itinerary for her…
I never expected to be pulled into someone else’s secret.
It happened late on a Friday at work. Most of the staff had already gone home, but I was still at my desk wrapping up a report when I saw my manager step out of the finance office with a brown envelope.
At first, I hardly paid attention.
He was a senior employee, after all, and he could get into nearly every part of the building.
Still, something made me take a second look.
The finance office was supposed to be locked. No one was allowed to take documents or cash without signing the register.
I watched him glance down the hallway before sliding the envelope into his laptop bag.
That was when he saw me.
For a moment, neither of us said anything.
He smiled.
“Still working?” he asked.
“Yes, sir.”
“Good. Keep it up. Hard work always pays.”

For two years, my boss called me his younger brother.
The day I asked why my salary was three months late, I learned what that brotherhood meant.
I joined the company when I was still struggling to find my feet. The salary wasn't much, but I was grateful for the opportunity. My boss treated me well in the beginning. He checked on me, invited me to eat with him, and sometimes told other staff members that he saw me as a younger brother.
I believed him.
Whenever salaries were delayed, he always had a reason. Sometimes a client hadn't paid. Sometimes the company was going through a difficult period. Other times, he promised everything would be settled the following week.
I kept being patient.
I had rent to pay, bills piling up, and family members who didn't know I was struggling. I stopped buying certain things for myself. I borrowed money to get through the month. There were days I went to work with barely enough money to get home.
Still, I kept showing up and doing my job.
I told myself that the company would eventually recover and that my loyalty would mean something.
Then, one Monday morning, I walked into his office and asked if he could at least pay part of what he owed me.
I wasn't rude. I didn't raise my voice. I simply explained that I had responsibilities I could no longer ignore.
He looked at me for a moment before asking, "So because of money, you've forgotten everything I've done for you?"
I didn't know what to say.
