Me to Nickelodeon: “Can we throw a kid off of a cliff?” Still digging through my old Kamp Koral storyboards, the last SpongeBob production I worked on before I moved on to mostly working in development. 90% of my job is being told no by execs, S&P, anyone. I only pitch things to make me & my extremely funny & talented coworkers laugh, because at the end of the day my paycheck isn’t any different and by the time it will reach a viewer, I’ll be two years away from the joke and will probably never know what they thought. Having fun with the team is all that matters as long as you can be told “no” / “change it” and not take it personally because it’s still a job. This is in the S2 episode of Kamp Koral, “Who’s Complaining” on Paramount +. I pitched this one expecting a no. Both kids & adult animation has strict “Standards and Practices” regulations (if you have seen the South Park episode “It Hits The Fan” they have the “Knights of Standards and Practices” poking fun at that annoying part of the process) This was just a gag I threw in mostly to make my supervising director laugh. It made more than just him laugh, and it went all the way to final. It’s still making me laugh looking back at it because I can’t stop thinking of my rough board thumbnails with “Can we throw a kid off of a cliff?” Written over the scene (Board revisionist: @duck_twacy)
