We took an new industrial site in CA off-grid with solar, batteries, and gas.
Everyone said it wouldn't work.
After over a year of operations:
✅ faster and cheaper than grid interconnection
✅ positive savings (net of PPA and fuel)
✅ majority clean power
✅ 99%+ uptime

Stargate, the biggest proposed investment in AI data centers to date, is using solar, gas, and batteries for off-grid power.
Why? It’s fast and cheap and scalable.

The @ScaleMicrogrids team has built microgrids for water utilities to backup water infrastructure throughout SoCal.
One pumping station lost power on Tuesday at 10pm. The microgrid has kept it running since, supporting water pressure in the region.
Lots more work to do.

A massive wave of new energy demand has been unleashed by AI.
How will we power it?
We think gigantic off-grid solar microgrids offer a very compelling solution.

Let's say I hypothetically take a small industrial facility off the grid.
On an average day it will be 75% solar and storage powered. The rest natural gas.
Do you feel this is good or bad? Why?

@ScaleMicrogrids has created the most powerful C&I energy project design software to ever exist. Here's a glimpse into its many advantages:
One key is that in addition to doing energy analysis (production and dispatch, utility rates, DR programs, avoided costs, etc.) like many tools, it has a full library of equipment costs, warranties, commercial terms, project finance structures, operating data, etc. that every team within Scale has contributed to, validated, and continually updates. It even has bottoms up switchgear sizing and upgrades calcs, installation and balance of system cost estimation, and more.
Scale is ready to transact with this library of data. That means no using "industry average" pricing, no taking a guess at what the warranty terms will be, or any of that confusing nonsense during the early stages of a potential deal. And in the latter stages, you're not calling vendors and begging for pricing, which often takes weeks and hundreds of emails.
This is also an enormous differentiator because if you use third party tools that could never know this information, it is incredibly time consuming and unreliable to find truly optimal designs, because you need to run their energy analytics and dispatch optimization, download the results, and then load them into your financial model to determine how you price the deal and thus what the customer's net economics are. This means design optimization is super iterative and ultimately relies on human intuition. It is also prone to human error and is constrained by the amount of time you can invest.
With our design software, you simply load in all of the model constants (customer load profile, utility rates, etc.), click what components you want to test (solar types and sizes, battery sizes, standby generators, etc.) and it run through a full energy and project finance model for every possible combination of those components. You can easily que up hundreds of scenarios in a matter of seconds, hit the button, and a few minutes later you have every possible result computed. Sort the results by customer NPV or whatever other metrics you care about, and boom, you're done. Several hours are turned into a few minutes, and usually better results are discovered because these problems often aren't intuitive.
A second big advantage is that we incorporate more power system performance requirements into the software that many simple energy analytics tools ignore.
Want to be able to ride through outages with your solar and storage system? We'll run hundreds of simulations to see how long you could last for a given critical load.
Trying to serve load that has greater nameplate capacity than your utility connection (very common these days with EV fleets and collocated data centers)? Unlike many DER design and optimization platforms, ours can understand these limitations and optimize dispatch and select system components accordingly, whether via simple peak shaving or for complex prime power systems.
There's a ton of other cool stuff we've got that I'm sure we'll talk about publicly soon. For now the software is entirely internal, but if you're developing C&I energy projects, need a partner, and think the above capabilities could help, let me know.
