What a joy to give a presentation to ‘the public’ at our beloved @regionshospital this past week, allowing me not only to express my gratitude for an amazing place and incredible people, but to reflect on the impact our Trauma Team has had globally. Our wonderful RHF Development Team hosted.
Friends and partners, patients and leaders, were on hand to celebrate the work and dreams. One of the programs I have been most proud of is our International Fellowships which have been vivid for me this week. While I am in Singapore speaking on trauma solutions pioneered at Regions Hospital, I am in the company of local host pictured, Dr. Tan, who was an inspired Regions fellow a decade ago, as well as Asia Pacific leaders from Korea, Japan, Thailand, and Hong Kong all who have come to Regions Hospital to learn techniques in trauma…..and much more.
Meanwhile, we sent Dr. Hector Tuesta to Peru where he will elevate care in Lima. Here he is receiving his certificate after an eye-opening talk for the residents on Orthopedics in Peru.

One of the “Highs” from this year’s Orthopaedic Trauma Association for me was the influence and gathering of dozens of our University of Minnesota @RegionsHospital-NorthStar Trauma Fellows of which we have 50+ in 20+ years! They are breaking boundaries of science, raising bars for education even while promoting resilience and vitality of the specialty and its members. That reality was palpable at the Regions-NorthStar Trauma Reception in Nashville this year.

For far too long, scapula fractures and associated chest wall injuries have been among the least understood in orthopedic trauma. Finding the right information, expertise, and resources hasn’t always been easy.
That’s why the Scapula Institute needs a true digital home.
One place built for patients, surgeons, and health care professionals. A space that brings together the right information, opportunities, and people to advance understanding, connect expertise, and ultimately improve care.

I am ecstatic to contribute to the Madrid Shoulder Course, but even more so to learn. This will be my 2nd rodeo with Chairmen–Drs. Fernando Marco, Samuel Antuña, and Emilio Calvo. These guys can ROCK a course…very global & avant-garde! From my perspective as an orthopaedic traumatologist, I love learning from the lens of sub-specialized shoulder surgeons who view shoulder soft tissues, neuroanatomy, and reconstructive options in a much different way. I hope to see some of you there!

For over three decades, Dr. @peter_a_cole has dedicated his career to one of the most overlooked areas of orthopedic trauma: scapula fractures and the injuries that accompany them — rib and sternal fractures, costal margin and sternoclavicular joint dislocations. It's complex anatomy that few surgeons specialize in, and it's the driving force behind his life's work.

Forequarter Lateral Implosion Injury Going Global
Not only did my good friend David Lo (盧康樂) design a course on Shoulder Implosion injuries this year for Asian surgeons, but my dear friend Bryan Yijia Tan publishes this fine work from his Singapore experience.

Dr. Lo was a visiting Minnesota Scapula Scholar in 2025.
Dr. Tan was a visiting AO Fellow at Regions NorthStar in 2015.
In a recent 6-week stretch, my partners and I at @RegionsHospital have treated 9 of these “Trifectas” and it is amazing to witness the patients’ rehab. At the 2-week followup, whether back to self-dressing or taking clarinet lessons, the testimonies are compelling. I tell the residents, “It’s simple! It doesn’t matter the bone--when they rattle, they hurt; when they’re stable they don’t!”

A rib fracture on the slopes. A climbing fall gone wrong. A biking trip that came to an abrupt end. Dr. Kryskow has spent 20+ years treating chest wall trauma and high-impact injuries: the kind that happen when the body is pushed to its limits. What sets him apart isn't just his training. He's lived it.
Before bringing his skills into the operating room, Dr. Mark Kryskow trained and served as a military assault climber in the United States Army, specializing in technical mountaineering and ice ascents. That world demanded relentless preparation, technical mastery, decisive action, and calm under pressure…the same qualities that now define his approach to surgical care.
That's also why he co-founded the Regional Mountain Trauma System (RMTS) — connecting ski patrol, EMS, and trauma centers so mountain athletes get the right care as efficiently as possible. Dr. Kryskow treats his patients in a manner that is set apart, because he can relate to them.

Full Circle Moment
In 2013 we graduated one of the esteemed @RegionsHospital NorthStar Trauma Fellows, Jonathan Dubin, MD. The fellows’ charge is always to go into the world and, “Wave the Banner high!” To be invited in 2026 to deliver the 45th Annual Diveley Lectureship to Dr. Dubin’s own graduating class of Chief Residents (he’s now the Program Director), was an academic highlight. @DrAkinCil, Chair should be very proud of the 48-hour event, a race not unlike the 400-meter dash -- 4 Keynotes, 16 Resident Case presentations, 6 Resident Research Competition, and a grandiose Grad Party at the Kemper Museum in KC. Three months later, new Grads Kenneth Furlough, Katherine Branche, and Amin-Joyce are waving their own Banners high in Boston and Denver!

📸 Meet Ethan
Ethan is passionate about helping brands, artists, and ideas find new light through visual storytelling. Blending a documentary eye with a marketer's mindset, he creates photo and video content that is both authentic and purposeful.
With et al., Ethan's work spans a diverse range of projects and environments. One day he may be filming a complex surgical approach, documenting a cadaver course or medical conference, or capturing a patient's story. The next, he may be traveling to the Peruvian Amazon to produce mission-driven content or creating social media features that showcase the people, partnerships, and purpose behind our work.
His versatility allows him to move between the clinical and creative worlds, translating complex medical expertise into compelling visual stories that educate, connect, and inspire.
When he's not working, you'll likely find him with a camera in hand, photographing everyday people, places, and moments. It's a practice that continually shapes how he sees the world and ultimately how he helps tell stories.

Thanks to mi Amigo @NaquiraHand for inviting and hosting me so graciously. Felipe’s a humble talent, an outstanding Upper Extremity trauma surgeon giving thought to many of the same Manubrio-Clavicular Conundrums as I am. We have both concluded, many such dislocations do not end up favorably with no intervention, whether medial fracture dislocations or pure SC dislocations. I was frankly astounded by the quality of care, research, innovation and education happening across the whole @SCCOTCOLOMBIA in this gorgeous country.

Great Congratulations to Ethan Ayers, MD and Paulo Casteneda, MD who will be heading to NYU Langone, Long Island and Phoenix’s Dignity Health, Saint Joe’s, to wave the NorthStar Banner high! This is number 44 and 45, Ortho Trauma Fellows from Regions Hospital, who now span North America’s two countries in over 30 states and provinces. Pictured from graduation last night with families and friends and the entire University of Minnesota Orthopedic Fellow Cohort, and from their last 5:30 a.m. Career Dimensions breakfast at Mickey’s Diner in Saint Paul this morning. They both went with the favorite One Eyed Jack and they were quite happy!
I asked them to write down what they perceive as their Top 5 priorities in order heading into their new lives, and we had a great discussion. I was proud to discuss all their choices including: Knowing my purpose, Landing softly, Being proud of surgical results, Bringing joy to work, Focusing on better resident education, Early involvement in leadership, Saying Yes…..Saying No, Let my yes be yes, and of course their beloved Ladies.
Light the World Aflame guys!

Cast your vote & help us shape Dr. Moreno's brand identity!
These concepts are not final—they're early creative directions, and we'd love your feedback before we continue refining. Please vote for your favorite between 1, 2, 3, or 4.
Every brand has a story. For years, Dr. Moreno's signature logo has featured a subtle elbow hidden within the letter M—a simple mark that has represented his journey from the very beginning.
Since then, that journey has grown far beyond a logo. What began as a platform centered on shoulder and elbow surgery has evolved to reflect education, innovation, mentorship, family, entrepreneurship, and a global community of colleagues, students, and patients.
We've had the privilege of partnering with Dr. Moreno to thoughtfully evolve his visual identity—not by leaving the past behind, but by building upon the foundation that has defined it.
For this first round, we're evaluating design only. Color, refinements, and additional iterations will come later. Each concept intentionally incorporates meaningful elements from Dr. Moreno's story, including:
• A crest representing heritage, family, community, and shared values.
• An evolution of his original M with the hidden elbow preserved.
• A broader shoulder and arm integrated into the mark, reflecting his specialty.
• A modern interpretation of the Tree of Andry, symbolizing restoration, education, mentorship, and growth, with roots representing the people and communities that have shaped his life and career.
• Additional layers of symbolism woven throughout each design.
Thank you for helping shape the next chapter of Dr. Moreno's story. More to come. 💪

Dr. Antônio Tufi & Pablo Vargas deserve Maximo-Credito for AO LAT Palm Beach this year!
A major thanks to our mentor Dr. Miguel Zublin for connecting us all for a Curso Fabuloso!
My Tuesday was Titanic with my three fave topic lectures, three case discussions, three lab dissections, and a Live Surgery Streaming to Latin America.
We had a blast together and it was nice to meet such an engaged and hospitable faculty. We were all sponges soaking up lessons together and I have a whole swath of new amigos. Interestingly, I gave my first lecture in Spanish, second in English, and the group voted for my third to be in Spanglish.

Pronounced chε-sha
The Ch-Sh Classification represents over a decade of clinical work in which I have considered the surgical continuum inclusive of the entire ‘shoulder girdle’ and its underlying chest wall.
Our forequarters work in concert, not as individual bones in isolation. Having started with a passion for scapula fractures, the injury pathology presentations I was witnessing simply did not allow me to be focused on the scapula alone. The scapula doesn’t work properly without a functioning AC & SC joint, or without an aligned clavicle; nor the sheet of ice on which it glides which are, the ribs.
