Some see Bill Stoner as a pitiable failure, beaten down and defeated. Others see a heroic character at peace with his imperfect life (as everyone’s is). Stoner did more living than most of us. That we find his path and outcomes unacceptable says something about us, not him.

Few things more infuriating than the “maybe we were wrong about some things we kicked a lot of cans over about and mocked the other side for” essay when the evidence and correct arguments were always apparent from the get-go.

Tolstoy writes Moscow burned when the French occupied it but they did not burn it. He said when people who call a wooden city home abandon it, and strangers who don’t care replace them, a wooden city will burn. It’s just the way of things. Make of that what you will.

You cannot know what you think unless you can write it cogently for others to read. With AI we are not subcontracting out the writing; we are subcontracting out the thinking.

The issue isn’t that the universities won’t admit to being progressive seminaries. (Does anyone not realize what they are?) It’s not a consumer disclosure issue. The real problem is substantive: progressivism is bad, it has injected poison into the body politic for decades, and universities should be ordered to the good, the true and the beautiful.
"We propose that universities that are committed to progressive policies simply say so." In a new @washingtonpost op-ed, HxA President John Tomasi and Harvard Professor Tyler VanderWeele encourage progressive schools to model themselves after religious colleges. "They should tell students, faculty and the public that, like religious colleges, they have opted to teach and pursue knowledge through a particular lens: roughly, the lens of progressive politics."

Characteristic of the left: substituting cleverness for wisdom
This remark is so spot-on, widely applicable in law and elsewhere

Permanent DST is stupid because in the winter we get 9 AM sunrises. Permanent Standard is stupid because in the summer we get 4:45 AM sunrises (and lose an hour of sun in the evening during the nicest time of the year). The best solution is what we do if we'd stop being babies.
BREAKING: House votes 308-117 to make daylight saving time permanent, sending the bill to the Senate.

Seldom has so much unexpected wisdom been uttered in a mere 90 seconds, and not at all about moviemaking but about how to live a good and happy life. “Support the director … fit within the design … don’t indulge” the selfish stuff. Bravo.

Everyone celebrating this is wrong. Congressional salaries should be quadrupled and members should fly privately. You get what you pay for and it shows, doesn’t it?
NEWS that Congressional staff are not going to like- Delta is suspending its special congressional desk service for members of Congress until the shutdown is over. @ajc ajc.com/politics/2026/03/the…

He means that everyone’s priority today is … how we feel. We’ll never say it out loud, but it’s how we live. Feelings uber alles. Ever consider how weird and childish that is?
It is 100% true that great men and women of the past were not sitting around moaning about their feelings. I regret nothing.

Give them this rope, Professor!
No specific text is needed to establish that the Justices must be human as a matter of law. If textualism can’t justify that fundamental premise of the constitutional order, then so much the worse for textualism.

“Platforming” is a stupid word. It was a stupid word a year ago and it’s a stupid word now. It obscures clear thought and writing. Avoid it. Or else soon you’ll be the one people will be scared to, er, platform.

American politics (especially conservative politics, it seems) is populated and run by people I’ve never heard of and wouldn’t recognize if I stepped on them. But rend your garments if you must.
