One bookie reached out to take this post down…. Do I leave it up or not
You can lose £200, £500 or even £1,000 and the bookmaker will happily take your money. But start winning consistently, and suddenly you're being asked for documents, having your stakes reduced, or even getting your account restricted.
The frustrating thing is that there are two very different issues here.
1. Asking for proof of address or ID
Bookmakers have legal obligations around identity verification, anti-money-laundering checks and safer gambling.
That's perfectly reasonable in principle.
But here's where I think your argument has merit: why should a customer be allowed to deposit and lose money, only to face additional checks when they try to withdraw their winnings?
There can be legitimate reasons for later checks, but if the bookmaker could reasonably have requested the information earlier, it's fair to question why it waited until you won.
