Lots of iPhone Duo users are urging each other to stick a glossy screen protector over the phone’s Nano Texture coating. Videos of PPF being applied to the Duo keep popping up on Facebook these days and are getting tons of views.
The cause is the Nano Texture coating itself. This matte coating handles glare well but lowers the screen’s contrast, so images look noticeably washed out, and the surface picks up fingerprints easily and never wipes clean.
The fix Duo users are choosing is to apply a clear, glossy protector over the inner screen. After that, the screen looks clearer with much better contrast, and the glossy surface shows fewer fingerprints than the original matte coating.
The trade-off is that once it’s glossy, the screen goes back to glare and reflections outdoors, exactly what the Nano Texture coating was made to fix. So it’s a matter of taste: if you care about picture quality, stick it on, and if you use the phone in the sun a lot, leave it as is.
A PPF application clip for the iPhone Duo from Moby Case Shop got over 76 thousand views in a short time. That number shows glossy screen protectors are a topic Duo users really care about.
🚨 HOTTEST RIGHT NOW: iPhone Duo suddenly gets streaks on its screen during a durability test livestream by Kuba Klawiter
In a recent live by famous Polish tech channel Kuba Klawiter, the iPhone Duo went through a continuous fold-and-unfold test.
The device suddenly “went down” after 75,000 fold-and-unfold actions, a number said to be noticeably lower than the 400,000+ for Samsung’s foldables under the same continuous folding conditions.

Specifically, before the screen officially cracked while sitting on the table, the device had just gone through a thermal shock test, being soaked in ice for 19 minutes, which made its temperature drop suddenly from over 30°C to around 6°C.
This incident has got people online debating heatedly about whether the screen streak problem comes from mechanical wear or from thermal shock.
Posts like these are exactly why I’m not just going to believe every broken iPhone Duo post out there. Too many people will just lie for clout.
🚨 UPDATE: STATUS OF THE IPHONE DUO THAT GOT DROPPED YESTERDAY
Don’t let yours get dropped like this guy’s, everyone
Use it as carefully as you possibly can 😭😭😭
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The apparent crack on the screen is a joke wallpaper mimicking reported "Crackgate" damage, not actual hardware failure. The poster confirmed it is just the wallpaper.

Is this the part that’s causing the iPhone Duo’s screen to break, show streaks and be unable to fold ⁉️
Recently, Max Weinbach shared a case of a friend of his who had a serious problem with the iPhone Duo: the folding screen cracked, streaks appeared and the hinge could no longer fold.
Notably, leaker L0vetodream shared a photo of a small metal part inside the hinge area, raising suspicion that this could be the cause.
👉 This part is described as a travel-limiting steel plate, which protects the display cable underneath and also provides a support point so the screen doesn’t sink in.
👉 According to L0vetodream’s hypothesis, the steel plate may have gotten stuck during folding and unfolding, failed to return to the right position and popped up, putting pressure on the screen from underneath.
👉 This could explain the cracked screen, streaks and jammed folding mechanism all at once.
Of course, this is only a hypothesis from the community, with no evidence confirming that this metal part actually caused the problem, and it’s also unclear whether this is a design flaw, an assembly error or an isolated case.
But if the hypothesis is correct, the iPhone Duo’s problem may not lie in the durability of the OLED panel, but in the very mechanical structure designed to protect it.

🚨 IFIXIT TEARS DOWN THE IPHONE DUO: FINDS A POSSIBLE CAUSE OF SCREEN DAMAGE FROM IMPACT FROM THE INSIDE
Now that iFixit has finished tearing down the iPhone Duo, with a 3D hinge model and CT scans included, let’s see what they found. Heads up, iFixit hasn’t confirmed the cause, but they’ve narrowed it down pretty clearly.
👉 A foldable is two halves of a phone, so a cable has to run through the hinge
- Before getting to where it cracks, let me explain the design a bit, since this is what you guys keep asking about.
- A foldable like the iPhone Duo is basically two halves of a body connected by a hinge, and each half has its own components.
- According to iFixit, one battery sits under the back glass and the other sits under the outer screen, so one in each half.
- But Apple only put the charging on one side, so the battery on the other side has to be charged through the cable connecting the two halves.
- That cable also has to carry a lot of video and audio data across the hinge gap. Simply put, without this cable the two halves can’t work together.
- For the cable to pass through, the hinge has to leave a gap in the middle, and the cable is folded like an accordion so it can stretch and contract every time you fold and unfold the phone.
- That gap is exactly where the structure supporting the screen changes: above it is the empty gap for the cable, below it is the hinge’s central support bar.
And the inner screen sits right on top of all of this, thin and made of many layers, so wherever the support underneath changes, that spot is easy to get stressed.

The accordion-folded cable passes through the gap in the middle of the hinge, carrying both data and power 👇
- The interesting part is that iFixit thinks the culprit isn’t really the cable.
- The cable linking the two halves of a foldable is always the first suspect, but the damage they see in the photos isn’t exactly where the cable passes through, it’s a bit lower, at the transition from the cable gap to the central support bar, where many edges meet.
- iFixit’s hypothesis is that if the central support bar doesn’t drop down enough when the phone folds, the curved part of the inner screen presses down on it, creating a stress concentration point right near where users report cracks.
- The Verge adds that this area is also close to the battery.
- So to me the cable gap isn’t the flaw, it’s something that has to be there, but having to leave that gap makes the screen support in the middle of the hinge more complicated and could turn it into a weak point.
- As for which specific batteries and components sit in which half, apart from the two batteries, iFixit doesn’t say clearly so I won’t guess.
iFixit overlays the CT image and the hinge model on a faulty screen: the horizontal bright line and the line along the hinge intersect right below where the cable passes through the middle of the hinge 👇
Repair score 5/10, the highest for a foldable, but replacing the inner screen costs $999
- Provisional score of 5/10, the highest iFixit has ever given a foldable phone.
-The score is provisional because replacement parts are still pending.
-The two batteries use electrically released adhesive, 7.5 Wh and 11.6 Wh, 19.1 Wh in total, and iFixit praises it as the best battery removal experience on a foldable.
-The outer screen comes off easily, and the inner screen bezel uses clips so it comes off intact.
-The nano-texture coating scatters light to hide the crease.
-Remove this layer and the Duo’s crease is more visible than the Z Fold8’s.
-Replacing the coating costs $49, or $19 with AppleCare.
-Replacing the whole inner and outer screen out of warranty costs $999, about half the price of a new phone according to iFixit.
