The current chancellor has NEVER had a job outside of a union or the Labour party. Let that sink in for a minute.... He is 66 and has never had a proper job! Anyone surprised that his budget was useless?

👏 Brilliant from Sophy Ridge as she told the Chancellor to his face: your budget does NOTHING. The Chancellor walked in expecting soft questions on @RidgeandFrost about “change”. What he got was a direct challenge over the gap between the big promises and the empty budget he just delivered. Sophy didn’t let him hide behind spin for a second: “When Andy Burnham came in he promised change, not just any change, big change! He promised to end 40 years of neo-liberalism. Don’t take this the wrong way, but that wasn’t a budget to end 40 years of neo-liberalism, right?” Chancellor: “I would say that is wrong.” He claimed he’d set out decisions that would change Britain’s energy system and market for good. Sophy: “Like what?” Chancellor: “Like an end to levies on household bills.” She cut him off: “Come on! You’ve been talking about nationalisation of our utilities and ending 40 years of Thatcherism.” Chancellor: “He’s talking about bringing energy bills down and in line with Europe.” Sophy wasn’t having it: “You’re talking about levies on bills, this is a different order of magnitude.” Then the line that finished him: “Give me one thing in this budget that Rachel Reeves wouldn’t have done as chancellor?” He had nothing. This is a big nothing burger. Starmer 2.0. No fundamental change. Absolutely nothing in there for the working men and women who get up and graft all day for nothing. Nothing to incentivise work. Nothing to reward effort over dependency. Is it any wonder people are happy to sit on their backsides and get paid by the state? This government shows no sign at all of addressing that. They promised to end 40 years of the status quo. They delivered more of it.

😬 Nick Ferrari properly embarrassed the Chancellor on @LBC this morning by mocking his Budget. The first 30 seconds of the interview basically summed the whole thing up. He didn’t ease in. He went straight for the jugular and treated the Budget like the joke it is: “4p off the price of gherkins, 2p on a pint and a return to public/private partnership. This is not groundbreaking, Chancellor!” That’s it. That’s the big offer. 🤷‍♂️ Healey immediately said he “disputes that” and tried the old “if I can do the small things, I should do them” line, then claimed credit for freezing fuel duty. Ferrari was having none of it: “That was already frozen, wasn’t it? Where’s the big BOLD ideas, Chancellor?” And that was basically the interview. They could’ve ended it there. This Budget has gone down like a lead balloon. It does almost nothing for anyone. No one is coming away from it today thinking things are turning. It’s just a dull, unambitious continuation of the Starmer-Reeves government, the same tinkering, the same lack of vision, the same refusal to actually change anything that matters. The Burnham bounce is well and truly over. He talked a big game: we’ll do this, we’ll do that, things have to change, government working for the people, blah blah blah. Then he delivers this. 💀

Kemi Badenoch was absolutely brilliant in her #Budget response. 🔥 “Inflation UP, government spending UP, debt interest UP, mortgage rates UP, benefit claims UP, unemployment UP, welfare spending UP.” It’s always higher taxes, to pay for more benefits with Labour.

😂 Nick Ferrari bursts out laughing as Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds is forced to sell the latest government gimmick live on @LBC Reynolds looked thoroughly embarrassed as he tried to sell the plan to scrap import tariffs on a list of “everyday essentials”. When Ferrari asked him which products were included and what the actual savings would be, Reynolds immediately started dampening expectations, sheepishly admitting these were “not huge reductions” before reeling off the list: baked beans, chocolate, gherkins… That’s as far as he got. Ferrari could not contain himself and burst out laughing. 😭 Nick then pointed out that the Conservatives have called the projected saving of £21 per year “derisory”. You could see Reynolds was mortified reading it out. Imagine the brief he opened this morning and realised he had to go on air and sell this to the public. 😬 What a farce. Even on the government’s own figures, this works out at roughly 40p a week for the average household. Forty pence a week. You lucky people. Another pointless gimmick that will have zero material impact on people’s lives.

7.75% when you owe HMRC. 2.75% when HMRC owes you. Very tidy spread when you write the rules yourself.

Only the BBC could devise a funding model where the solution to people not watching your programmes is to charge them for watching somebody else's. Under this logic, every time I order a Domino's, I should send Pizza Hut £2.50 to support the future of British pizza.

I hate to be the one to burst the Tesla bubble today, but the spectacular “flight” we witnessed at the Roadster reveal needs a little context. The car is carrying around 250kg of compressed air, plus the weight of the tanks, valves and thrusters needed to contain and release it. Based on the published figures, that gives it roughly 1.5–2 seconds of maximum thrust before the system needs to be refilled. In short, it's a gimmick.

Excellent article in the Wall Street Journal on Britain's unsustainable welfare spending: — 7 million people (over 10% of the UK population) now claim at least one or more sickness or disability benefit. This is up 60% in the past 6 years. — The UK will spend over £100 billion pound this year on sickness and disability benefits. This is projected to increase to £130 billion a year by 2030. — No other Western country has seen such a rise in disability claims. In the US, 10.6 million people claim some form of federal disability payment, despite the population being 5x larger. — 1 in 7 new cars sold in the UK are under the Motability scheme; however, only 10% of cars are modified for a disability. In one dealership, 25 out of 26 cars they sold in August were all under the Motability scheme. — Charities, consultants, YouTubers and TikTokers have all sprung up, telling people how to maximise benefit access. Some of these videos receive hundreds of thousands of views. Over 1,000 people a day are signing on for PIP. — According to a Government survey from 2024, 25% of the UK's working age population could theoretically be classed as disabled under the current criteria and access these benefits. — A minimum wage worker who works 40 hours per week would take home around £1,880 per month after tax; however, if you are classed as too sick to work and claim PIP, you can take home £2,000 tax free per month. wsj.com/world/uk/united-king…

The UK Prime Minister solves the fuel price rises by telling motorists to look at Google Maps to find the cheapest garage. Next week he will solve the housing crisis by reminding everyone that Rightmove exists.
I know people are worried about fuel prices. And I get it. You get to the pump, watch the numbers climb, and wonder why it's costing so much more than it used to.   The reality is that global events are pushing up costs, and families here at home are feeling the impact.   But I won't accept that there's nothing I can do to help.   That's why from today, you'll be able to see petrol and diesel prices on Google Maps, compare nearby stations and find the cheapest option before you fill up.   It's a small change, but if there's a practical way to help people keep more money in their pocket, I'll do it.
