The picture of the long line was taken during a COVID lockdown when people weren't allowed to go inside the Starbucks. It is atypical.

School tortured me with grammar, but never taught me how to write.
School pushed me on math, but never taught me how to read statistics.
School taught me politics, but never how to understand politicians.
School taught me chemistry, biology, and physics, but failed to explain how the universe works.
School taught me history, but never how to understand the present.
School taught me sports, but not how to build a healthy body.
School taught me about religion, but never what spirituality is.
If you failed after school like I did, you failed for a reason. But it is never too late to learn the fundamentals and change your life for the better. That's why we are here, to get rid of the chains that limit our lives and our souls.

Big lesson from my time in Italy is how local clusters of excellence are.
The high-end coffee bars in the *Milan airport* are better than just about anything you'll find in the United States. So is the salami at the train station in Reggio Emilia.
Intuitively, you'd think that something as simple as a coffee bar or salami would travel well, but nope.
Peak performance is local.
Proof that much of what makes people and things world-class transcends language. Can't be defined because it's born out of ineffable social interactions.
The lesson: Geography matters, even in the Internet age.
If you're serious about your craft, you have to travel. You won't find the recipe for peak excellence in a book. Meet your heroes. Move to the epicenter of your industry.
See excellence in the flesh.

C.S. Lewis on why you need to read more old books:
“It is a good rule, after reading a new book, never to allow yourself another new one till you have read an old one in between. Every age has its own outlook. It is specially good at seeing certain truths and specially liable to make certain mistakes. We all, therefore, need the books that will correct the characteristic mistakes of our own period. And that means the old books."

I spent years freaking out about my weaknesses until I saw how success is a power law — and power laws outlandishly reward people with unique skillsets, even when they come at the cost of glaring weaknesses.
