For first-time buyers, these homes offer a chance to build equity and get a foothold in the housing market. But local regulations can make similar homes difficult to build elsewhere. Watch the full conversation on housing reform: showmeinstitute.org/article/…

Wichita is breaking the mold on starter homes. Duplexes have accounted for roughly 40% of new housing production over the past five years, with homes available around $180K. Mercatus scholar Salim Furth explains what other cities can learn from Wichita on the @ShowMe Institute’s podcast. 🏠

With the announcement of a 3.6% Social Security COLA, it's worth noting that changes to COLAs have been proposed to help Social Security remain solvent. Back in 2015, I argued for a progressive 3-tier COLA: increase COLAs at the bottom; retain the CPI-W in the middle; and use the chain-weighted CPI at the top. Since then others, like @crfb, have proposed different (and probably better) progressive COLA adjustments. Come the trust fund's exhaustion in 2032, Social Security will need to generate savings, and quickly. COLA reductions for high-income beneficiaries could do that. nationalreview.com/2015/11/s…

Core CPI printed at +0.33% in September, about a tenth of a point higher than most forecasters had anticipated. The 3-month annualized rate rose to 3.4% from 2% in August.

Missouri's open enrollment policies are extremely limited, and the state allows public schools to charge fees or tuition to transfer students.

Just 13 states’ open enrollment laws got grades of B or better in @ReasonFdn’s new report, Public Schools without Boundaries: 2026. This report ranks and grades the open enrollment laws in all 50 states. 33 states got F grades. reason.org/open-enrollment/p…

"Additionally, research finds that open enrollment programs don’t cause fluctuations in enrollment. A 2026 Show-Me Institute report finds that cross-district open enrollment in CO, KY, OK TN, and WI did not lead to volatility in public school enrollment. Similarly, launching these programs did not result in mass student migrations from unpopular districts to more popular ones. Moreover, these programs’ launches were not associated with school or district closures, except in Wisconsin’s case, where school closures spiked during the first year of implementation. However, the authors noted that this effect “dissipated quickly and is not replicated in other states.” "

Leave aside debate about vouchers, ESA's, charters, federal tax credit, etc. One of easiest ways to get parents more engaged with public schools is to give them more choice *among public schools.* We're not even getting that right. @reason @ReasonFdn reason.org/open-enrollment/p…

1/ A new Lincoln Institute report makes a stronger case against business incentives than it admits: weak evidence that TIF creates jobs, and research showing incentives usually don’t change companies’ decisions. Yet it stops short of telling cities to abandon them.
