The thing is, a whole generation didn’t hate the Star Wars prequels. I was 18 when Phantom Menace came out, saw it opening night with a few friends from student res, and then rewatched it at least three or four times in the theatre over the next month or so. Pretty much everyone saw this movie (and EpII & III). Guys and girls. Nerds and casuals. Many went multiple times (the box office numbers prove this). The merch sold through the roof, every magazine featured cover stories with the cast, most casual fans thought Jar Jar was funny while the Star Wars nerds were obsessed with the tech behind the character. Girls loved Padme’s fashion while straight guys loved Portman. The online fandom was hyperactive with fan theories, fan art, etc with a very clear even split between the male/female demos. Fan and general public reaction was insanely positive. This particular scene became ICONIC. 98% of the negativity came from the professional film critics. TPM wasn’t perfect by any means but the media definitely tried to push the message that it was a disaster, Jake Lloyd sucked, and that Jar Jar was offensive and racist. This weird gaslighting that it was the fans who were negative and toxic is just current media trying to do damage control for just how negative they were at the time.
“I genuinely can't understand how the previous generation saw this in 1999 and said "this sucks".”

You can hate on military movies or Pratt all you want but I actually think we need more movies like this. Specifically, the live action PG and PG-13 movie. Everything now is edgy and R and for adults or a cartoon. If Karate Kid came out today you’d have a bunch of A24 disciples on Twitter talking about how bad it looks. This isn’t for you. We need more live action movies that kids and their parents can watch together. We’ve lost the Sandlots and Mighty Ducks and Mrs Doubtfires. I hope, at the very least, this does well enough to green light more family friendly movies.

This is completely true if your experience in Japan is limited to luxury hotels and bars and restaurants in Ginza.
I love how the Japanese do lighting. It seems like everywhere you go, it's low and warm lighting. It's pleasant.

England is crazy right now.

There isn’t a single public lesbian space in Australia today. I was just reminiscing with women this morning about 90s Melbourne & Sydney & how you could live your whole life around lesbian businesses, groups, events, performances, healthcare… you name it.
"In the 1980s, there were more than 200 lesbian cafes in the United States and plenty in western Europe. That landscape is now barren. Almost all lesbian cafés have either disappeared or became "inclusive" - which means they welcome men." Bev Jackson (Book: Rebel Girls)

I’ve been a Netflix subscriber since it launched in Australia but I’m thinking I might unsubscribe. I’m just not watching it anymore. Marvel’s Defenders shows. I signed up for Netflix to watch Daredevil. All these shows are on Disney+ now and the characters are continuing in new D+ projects. Sense8. This show was incredible but it got canned after two seasons. At least they gave it a special series finale episode thing. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Iconic. Netflix cancelled it after a few seasons and has even DELETED the multiple choice special which was the series finale. Stranger Things. Amazing. Loved it. But it’s finished now. (I MIGHT rejoin Netflix when that spin-off series debuts ten years from now.) Fauda. Watched the whole show for the first time this year. Could rejoin when S6 premieres but that’s a couple of years away. Hill House/Bly Manor/Midnight Mass. Superb series but they’re done. Plus Flanagan’s Netflix deal has expired. House of Cards. Of course. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Riverdale (Netflix exclusive outside of the USA) were fun but are also finished. Netflix was great for Star Trek but that’s all on Paramount+ now. It’s been about a decade and these are the only Netflix shows I can think of that left an impact on me. All of them except for one have been cancelled. Definitely can’t think of any upcoming Netflix projects that excite me. The Magician’s Nephew could have been the thing to keep me engaged but my enthusiasm for that has pretty much died after seeing the trailer. I think I’m on an annual subscription so I’ll just cancel it and let it expire. Anyone else in the same place? #Netflix

It really is wild how many Airbnb hosts think of their paying customers as family members they’re letting crash on their couch out of the goodness of their heart.

I mean…
its just bonkers the new policy @airbnb is trying to put in place. Putting the dishes in the dishwasher, taking out the trash, pulling the sheets off the bed....they are just standard things any normal person would do when staying at a house. Why wouldn't a host be allowed to say that?

I am not saying this for effect, I mean it quite literally: rhetoric like this gets Jews killed. Cenk is not just an embarassment, he is a hateful demagogue.
New @RebellionPac ad dropping in Michigan. We have to suffer here at home, so Israel can get all its wars. That’s why they buy politicians like Mike Rogers. He promised to serve Israel “unconditionally,” but never made that promise to you.

The BBC has agreed to pay £400,000 to an award-winning Jewish documentary-maker who alleged she was subjected to antisemitism and pushed out of the corporation after October 7. Lucie Kon, 57, spent 22 years at the BBC and worked on programmes including Panorama, Today, BBC Breakfast and Storyville. Films she commissioned or helped produce won an Oscar, Emmy and Bafta. Kon says her treatment changed dramatically after the Hamas attacks. She alleges colleagues described Zionists like her as “evil”, argued that Israel should be called terrorist if Hamas was, and told her to consider what had driven Hamas to carry out the massacre. When she proposed a documentary about October 7, Kon says she was told she was “too partial” to oversee it because she was Jewish. She subsequently filed a formal grievance, but a BBC investigation rejected her complaint. Kon says she was then kept away from work for months. During a restructuring, her position was made redundant and she failed to secure the similar role replacing it. She launched unfair-dismissal proceedings. The BBC has now agreed substantial compensation, reported as £400,000, without admitting liability or accepting that Kon suffered antisemitism. Kon says Jewish employees still at the corporation continue to face hostility and feel unable to identify openly as Jewish or Zionist.

Hey @grok. Which 20th-century political party most prominently claimed its people were suffering because an out-group was draining national resources and harming them?

Something worth noting about Clayface is that its budget (before marketing) was only $30-44 million. Kind of radical for a DC movie. For comparison, Superman cost $225 mil and Supergirl $170 mil. Marvel should try similar with some movies focusing on street-level heroes like Daredevil, Heroes For Hire, Cloak & Dagger, etc.
