On this day in 1942, two British sailors swam to a sinking German submarine, climbed down inside it to grab its secret codebooks, and drowned when it suddenly plunged to the bottom, taking them with it. What they handed up through the hatch before they died helped turn the whole Battle of the Atlantic. This is the capture of U-559. To understand why it mattered so much, you have to understand how badly the war at sea was going. The German U-boats were strangling Britain, sinking merchant ships faster than they could be replaced, and the one thing that had let the Allies fight back was the ability to read the U-boats' secret radio messages, encoded on the famous Enigma cipher machines. But in early 1942 the Germans had added a fourth rotor to the Enigma machines used by their Atlantic submarines, and overnight the Allied codebreakers at Bletchley Park went blind. This new cipher, which the British called Shark, could not be broken. For most of 1942, the Allies could no longer read the U-boat signals, and the slaughter of their convoys grew terrible. The codebreakers knew that what they desperately needed was physical help, the actual codebooks from a captured U-boat, to find a way back into Shark. And on October 30, in the eastern Mediterranean, the chance came. A group of British destroyers hunting a submarine finally pinned down the U-559 and hammered her with depth charges for hours until, battered and leaking, she was forced to the surface. Her crew abandoned the sinking boat. Aboard the destroyer Petard, three men saw their opportunity and took it. A young officer, Anthony Fasson, and an able seaman, Colin Grazier, stripped off and swam through the dark water to the wallowing, half sunk submarine. They climbed down inside the flooding hull, into a cramped steel space that could become their tomb at any second, and began grabbing everything they could find, the secret documents and codebooks, and passing them up and out to a third man, a teenage canteen assistant named Tommy Brown, who ferried the material across to a boat. Among the papers they seized were the vital cipher documents the codebreakers needed. Then the U-boat, with no warning, suddenly filled and dropped. She plunged to the bottom of the Mediterranean, and Fasson and Grazier, still inside her, had no time to escape. They went down with the submarine and drowned, having just handed their country one of the most valuable prizes of the entire war. Tommy Brown, who had scrambled clear, survived. What those two men died to retrieve was exactly what Bletchley Park had been praying for. With the codebooks from U-559, the codebreakers found their way back into the four rotor Shark cipher, and before long they were once again reading the secret orders of the U-boat fleet. That knowledge let the Allies route their convoys around the waiting wolfpacks and send their hunters straight to the submarines, and it was one of the decisive factors in turning the Battle of the Atlantic in the Allies' favor over the following year. Fasson and Grazier were each awarded the George Cross, the highest British decoration for bravery away from the enemy's fire, both of them posthumously. Tommy Brown received a medal for gallantry too, and only afterward did it come out that he had been just sixteen years old, having lied about his age to join up. He himself would die not long after, in a fire while trying to save his little sister. Their story was so dramatic it was later turned into a Hollywood film, though the movie controversially made the heroes Americans. The truth was that it was two British sailors who gave their lives, swimming into a sinking submarine to steal its secrets, on this day in 1942, in one of the bravest and most important acts of the whole war at sea.

Republicans want you to focus your attention on the name Dan Sullivan appearing on the ballot in Alaska twice and forget that the name Donald Trump appears 38,000 times in the Epstein files.

I’m so sick and tired of Republicans feigning outrage over the recruitment of another Dan Sullivan in Alaska. These are the same people who: - Called Georgia election officials demanding they β€œfind” 11,780 votes. - Organized fake elector slates to overturn an election. - Pressured Mike Pence to reject legitimate electoral votes. - Tried to use the Justice Department to overturn election results. - Pressured state legislators to change certified election outcomes. - Considered seizing voting machines. - Tried to stop the certification of an election on January 6. - Entertained deploying troops or federal agents near polling places. - Pushed baseless election fraud claims for years. - Are now threatening to block certification of an Alaska election if they lose. And THESE people want to lecture Democrats about election integrity? Give me a break.

I too will withhold my personal opinion on this case. I always assume that when Trump or @PeteHegseth make a public pronouncement, they are only releasing that portion of the story they want us to know. They never release clarifying or exonerating information.
We don’t know why Hegseth fired another top general. But maybe he was telling uncomfortable truths about Iran and Ukraine. Or maybe he simply believed the American people have a right to know what’s going on. After all, when was the last time the Pentagon held a press briefing?

Because Trump always believes he is entitled.
Donald Trump calls for an unconstitutional third term: "Maybe we do one more term. Should we? Do one more term! We're entitled to it." @atrupar (2026)

The shortest path on Earth is never a straight line on a map. It is the arc of a great circle. The haversine formula computes that arc by folding the differences in latitude and longitude into half-angles, then taking a square root and an arcsin. This keeps the result stable even when the points are far apart and ordinary spherical trigonometry would lose precision. d = 2r arcsin(√[sinΒ²((Ο†β‚‚βˆ’Ο†β‚)/2) + cos φ₁ cos Ο†β‚‚ sinΒ²((Ξ»β‚‚βˆ’Ξ»β‚)/2)]) One clean expression turns two pairs of coordinates into the true surface distance.

I'm a MD Democrat. In normal times, I'd agree w/you. But these are not normal times. Trump directed Rs in red state legislature to redraw maps to benefits Rs. Eight did: AL, FL, LA, NC, OH, TN, TX & UT. Did you complain? When Rs agree to fair maps, I will support fair maps in MD.
Question 3 moves us backwards. It would give partisan mapmakers more freedom to divide our communities, combine distant areas, and manipulate district boundaries to produce the election results they want. In short, it lets politicians pick their voters, rather than citizens picking their representatives. I’ve long been opposed to gerrymandering, wherever it was happening and whoever was doing it. Thankfully, this time, the people of Maryland have the chance to make their voices heard. Politicians should not be rewarded with the power to erase the constitutional requirements they violated. And we shouldn’t take Maryland back to the days when our congressional maps were held up as some of the worst, most gerrymandered in America. If politicians won’t do the right thing, Maryland voters should do it for them. Vote against Question 3. baltimoresun.com/2026/10/29/…

The Sisters of Charity of New York rebuked the 12 bishops who prayed over Trump in the Oval Office on Saturday. β€œWhere was the concern for the poor? For immigrant families being torn apart?” the sisters asked. By Sunday, two of the twelve had expressed regret. Milwaukee’s Archbishop Jeffrey Grob issued a public apology, and Des Moines Bishop William Joensen said the White House exploited the meeting for partisan purposes. On Monday, Kansas City Archbishop Shawn McKnight told TIME his predecessor went to the Oval Office β€œin his own individual capacity.” thelettersfromleo.com/p/new-…

It almost hurts to watch him explain how he isn't high IQ and passing those tests only mean your cognitive decline isn't as bad as it will be getting. My near-death father passed it. Although, he was slightly less delusional than the orange pedo.
Trump: I'm a very high IQ person. I passed 3 cognitive tests. They’re hard. Obama couldn’t have passed them. Republicans wouldn't have passed them

Kind of like the β€œfree” money Trump is promising to give Americans if @GOP wins the midterm elections. Why not just give it to us now without conditions? Or like the $90 Trump recently gave Medicare recipients?
The β€œfree” stuff is just the acceptable way to attain power, now it’s morphing into its Islamist phase which is much worse…

I’m no Trump fan. Check my TL if you don’t believe me. But presidents before Reagan generally didn’t return salutes. But most did once Reagan started the practice. Presidents have more important things on their minds than keeping track of salutes they need to return. Let it go.
We examined a video claiming to show Trump neglecting to salute two Marines upon disembarking Marine One. It's authentic. βœ… snopes.com/fact-check/trump-…
