The core aim of Labour think tanks like Torsten Bell's Resolution Foundation to apply National Insurance to savings and rental income is being accomplished by stealth.
But to do it all in one go was seen as too politically difficult, so Labour is increasing the tax rate on this income by 2% a year. In a couple of years they'll have got this supplementary tax rate up to 8%, matching the standard rate of employee NI. But of course the more you tax something, the less you get of it. As the OBR has confirmed this means fewer rental properties and higher rents. It will also mean fewer savings.
The OBR noted that the rental income tax hike risks βleading to a steady rise in rents through two effects":
βFirst, potential landlords are less likely to enter the market, reducing long-run rental supply, which risks a steady long-term rise in rents if demand outstrips supply β which we think is more likely than not".
βSecond, landlords are likely to pass on more of these costs to renters in the long-run through a combination of some current landlords leaving, thereby giving more price setting power to remaining landlords, and greater long-run flexibility to raise rents.β
The left hates savers and landlords but the economy needs both of them. It's really sad that the left's prejudice continues to direct Labour budgets.

In 1990, 1.7 million British people paid the 40% rate of income tax.
By 2027, almost 9 million are projected to pay higher or additional rates.
From roughly 1 in 15 income taxpayers to more than 1 in 5.
On Budget Day, itβs worth remembering that higher-rate tax has become an increasingly ordinary tax on aspiration.
Britain needs lower taxes & less government in our lives.

Utter fuckwits running this country. They have never had a proper job in their lives so live off idealistic views.

βGovernment money is taxpayersβ money.β
Conservative MP Nigel Huddleston reminds Labour minister that every pound the government spends comes from taxpayers, as public frustration grows over rising taxes and how their money is redistributed.

I donβt think Iβve read such a rational analysis of the situation weβre in for a long time.
I've been in France since 2002 and have never seen the streets so violent nor the politics so extreme. From the sacking of the supermarket on my street to the prospect of PrΓ©sidente Le Pen, here's me @FT including thoughts from 2 French Nobel laureates as.ft.com/r/addcad57-0f9d-4eβ¦

Supply and demand. If you voted for Brexit, then suck it up. No more cheap European labour coming in, so the price will go up.

What most of the comments on here are not getting is that banks are already taxed more than other businesses. If you tax them further, the costs will just get passed onto consumers. Also, it will stunt growth even more. Anyone with an ounce of sense will understand this.

ALL politicians are corrupt. An average of Β£250k per year on expenses, paid £££ for second jobs which are essentially lobbying for private businesses, thousands for speeches, etc. They donβt care as itβs the publics money. Snouts in the trough.
