I will still check in here occasionally, but all lab news and science updates will be posted in the good place from here on out. 🦋
Always great to see interactive fly give your students’ work a shout-out! @SNayabFA @felicityhsu1

This! I am having trouble finding latine faculty in my field to invite to my dept seminars & build connections with. I would love to connect with latine scientists in general. Pls share and encourage your fellow latine faculty to sign up! I nominated myself.
Tired of wondering why conference speaker panels are not more diverse, Fred Hutch Faculty member and #latina @CterminiPhD , decided to do something about it. She created the Atlas of Inspiring Hispanic/Latinx #Scientists .

Being fascinated by things that nobody else in your field gaf about does not make you a bad scientist.

Hello Fly Friends - Yesterday many of you got an email from GSA asking you to express your interest in volunteering to serve on the Fly Board or award committees, and to present your work at or organize the Fly Meeting. Both faculty & trainees are invited to fill out the survey.

Our department is recruiting a Tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in Neuroinflammation, broadly defined. Excellent colleagues, supporting environment and low cost of living. Apply by 10/31. Please share! neurojobs.sfn.org/job/38089/…
This is a terrible hiring policy. I’ve served on K99 study sections, and there were fantastic scientists with stunning work who didn’t received the K99 because they didn’t need more training or otherwise didn’t thread the needle as required for this mechanism.

I am puzzled by the proposal to limit K99 application eligibility to the first two years. Has the NRSA/F32 been discontinued? Applicants will now have to choose between two tracks - F32 vs K99? How can this not increase disparity between “F32” and “K99” labs and institutions?
Replying to @NIH
➡️ Shorten the eligibility window and refocus review criteria for a key mentored career development award (K99/R00) to facilitate more rapid transition of postdoctoral scholars.

Tissue regeneration must be tightly regulated by the body to ensure proper organization and prevent abnormal growths, such as cancer. Researchers have identified an RNA regulator called Brat as a key player in tissue regeneration.

A lovely writeup by science writer and postdoc Shelby Lawson at UIUC’s Institute for Genomic Biology highlighting @SNayabFA and @felicityhsu1 ‘s paper now out in PLOS Genetics!
Some animal species have the ability to regrow lost body parts. A team of researchers led by Rachel Smith-Bolton set out to understand how these tissues are regenerated without mistakes.

This was such a great session!
Fantastic talk at #TAGC24 by grad student @anishbose101 on his work on Zelda and the re-emergence of patterning and cell fate at the end of regeneration! Lots of interest in the story - look for a preprint soon!
