A Unified Voice for Californiaโs Water Future
More than 70 organizations and diverse interests came together for SCWCโs October 9 Water Urgency Roundtable with one shared message: California must act with urgency to secure its water future.
With 60% of Southern Californiaโs water resources facing uncertainty, collaboration and investment in reliable infrastructure are more important than ever.
The result? A unified Water Urgency Declaration, signed by all attendees, outlining a shared vision for Californiaโs water priorities through 2075.

Day two of the New California Coalitionโs Fall Investor Convening brought a deeper focus on one of the most important pieces of advancing meaningful policy solutions: communication, education, and advocacy.
For SCWC Executive Director Charley Wilson, the message is simple: Educate to advocate.
How do we reach more people, build awareness, and turn important conversations into action? By engaging with legislators, connecting with communities, sharing information, and making sure more Californians understand whatโs at stake.
From discussions on Sacramentoโs policy priorities to conversations about reaching and engaging new audiences, the focus remains on building relationships and strengthening the collective voice behind Californiaโs most pressing challenges.
As we look toward 2027, weโre excited to continue growing our coalition, expanding awareness, and bringing more voices to the table.
Thereโs strength in numbers, and we hope youโll be part of the conversation as we work toward real solutions for California!

Big challenges require bold thinking, meaningful collaboration, and a willingness to move beyond business as usual.
SCWC Executive Director Charley Wilson is in Napa Valley this week, joining approximately 100 leaders from across California for the New California Coalitionโs 3rd Annual Fall Investor Convening.
The conversations are focused on some of Californiaโs most pressing challenges, including water, housing, and energy, and how to develop proactive, focused, data-driven solutions that deliver real results.
For Charley, one message stands out: California canโt afford to keep approaching todayโs challenges with yesterdayโs playbook.
Itโs about learning from past experiences, bringing different perspectives to the table, and finding ways to move beyond political differences to solve real problems.
And when it comes to water, the urgency couldnโt be greater. Elevating water as a statewide priority and turning that urgency into meaningful action will require collaboration across industries, agencies, and communities.
Weโre excited about the relationships being built in Napa Valley and the opportunity to work alongside the New California Coalition over the next year to help turn forward-thinking conversations into lasting change.
Because California doesnโt just need more conversations about its challenges. It needs solutions.

Californiaโs water future demands more than conversation. It demands collaboration, shared priorities, and a commitment to action.
On October 9, Southern California Water Coalition convened leaders from across Californiaโs water community at LA County Public Works for our 2026 Water Urgency Roundtable, bringing together voices from business, agriculture, labor, energy, technology, academia, government, and advocacy.
Together, participants tackled some of the stateโs most pressing water challenges, from infrastructure investment and water affordability to regulatory innovation, diversified supplies, and climate resilience.
But this wasnโt just about identifying challenges. It was about building consensus around solutions.
A defining moment of the gathering was the Water Urgency Declaration, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing Californiaโs water priorities through coordinated messaging, meaningful partnerships, and collective action.
As California looks toward 2075, the work we do together today will help determine the strength and resilience of our water future.
Thank you to Mark Pestrella and LA County Public Works for hosting, and to every leader who brought their perspective, expertise, and commitment to the table.
The urgency is real. The commitment is shared. Now, itโs time to turn priorities into progress.

In Episode 31 of What Matters Water TV & Podcast, Charley Wilson puts our panelists on the spot with a lightning round focused on the future of AI, data centers, water and infrastructure in California.
Their answers to the first question?
๐ง Treating water planning as an afterthought to power planning and community hearings.
๐ Failing to integrate data and analytics so decisions can be made more holistically.
๐๏ธ Allowing outdated permitting timelines and regulations to push investment away from California when that investment could happen here.
Three perspectives on one big question facing California as AI infrastructure continues to grow.

The conversation around AI and water just got even more relevant.
Today, Governor Gavin Newsom signed seven bills addressing the growing impact of data centers on Californiaโs water, electricity, and land use.
The new legislation includes requirements for proposed data centers to disclose information about water use, supply, efficiency, and drought planning to local governments and water suppliers.
This raises a much bigger conversation: As AI continues to expand, how do we balance technological innovation with responsible water management and the infrastructure needed to support it?
Thatโs exactly what we explore in our upcoming episode of What Matters Water TV & Podcast!
SCWC Executive Director Charley Wilson brings together voices from across the industry to discuss AI, data centers, resource management, and what Californiaโs water leaders need to be thinking about as our digital economy continues to grow.
Itโs a timely conversation about the intersection of technology, water, and the future of California.

A closer look at Charleyโs day in downtown Los Angeles with SCWC founding member Metropolitan Water District.
Water advocate and ultrarunner Mina Guli just completed an incredible journey- roughly 2,000 miles along the Colorado River over 100 days- using each mile to bring attention to the river and the people and communities that depend on it.
But through Charleyโs eyes, today was about more than the miles.
It was about the conversations Minaโs journey created and how something as important as the Colorado River can bring people together instead of pushing them further apart.
Thatโs a lesson that hits home at SCWC. California water comes with complex challenges and different perspectives, but real progress starts when we come together, listen to one another and find common ground.
An incredible accomplishment. An important conversation. And another reminder that real solutions start with working together.
Your look through Charleyโs eyes.
