Manipulation is when you accidentally knock over a candle that sets a fire and then youre told by your abusive father that the victim didnt want to see you anymore so you rightfully stay away for their sake until you reconcile and apologize for said accident.
Blitz caused the fire that permanently maimed Fizz and destroyed their shared life, then stayed away for years. When they finally talk, he opens with the classic “it was an accident / I tried” before eventually owning it. People correctly treat that as a messy but legitimate attempt at accountability rather than “manipulation.”
Stolas’s early arrangement (book access tied to sex, massive class power gap, Blitzø not free to just walk away without losing his business) gets labeled abusive/manipulative even when he later tries to move past it or give Blitzø an out. Same pattern of “I hurt you, now I want connection/resolution” gets opposite moral framing depending on who’s doing it.
If the standard is “pursuing emotional repair after you caused lasting damage is inherently manipulative until the other person fully wants it,” apply it evenly. If it’s not, then stop pretending the difference is anything but who the fandom decided to main.
