Overnight, federal immigration agents gathered in force outside of the ambulance bay at Adventist Health White Memorial Medical Center in Boyle Heights, effectively sealing off a critical entrance. For patients and families in medical crises, that presence was frightening at the worst possible moment.
A hospital should be the one place where people feel safe. No one should have to think twice about receiving care or fear that a loved one's treatment could be interrupted because of their immigration status.
I condemn ICE's actions and call on the Trump Administration to stop all immigration enforcement in and around health care facilities. Hospital leadership also had a duty to step in right away to protect patients and neighbors, and by all appearances, that did not happen.
All of Los Angeles stands with Boyle Heights, and we will use every lawful tool available to protect the community. Because in Los Angeles, we stand together, and we fight.

President Trump nominated U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Arkansas Lee Rudofsky to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
This appellate court covers Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
There is a very limited window to confirm Rudofsky--before Senate Democrats block him.
Arkansas' two Republican home-state senators--@JohnBoozman and @TomCottonAR--are blocking Rudofsky, as they wanted someone else.
(They have @JohnCornyn and @SenThomTillis doing their bidding for them.)
They need to change their minds--and fast--or Republicans will lose this key appellate court seat.
Cornyn and Tillis are leaving the Senate.
But this is an unforgivable sin for Boozman and Cotton.

Sen. Chris Murphy has been discharged from Johns Hopkins Hospital after suffering a small hemorrhagic stroke and will miss several weeks of Senate votes as he recovers.
“Last Saturday afternoon, I felt something was not right with my body and called 9-1-1 out of an abundance of caution, and I’m glad I did,” Murphy said. “I was diagnosed with a small bleed in the thalamus region of my brain.”
“This has been a scary experience for me and my family,” he added.
Murphy will now spend several weeks at a rehabilitation center.
His doctor at Johns Hopkins says Murphy has shown “tremendous progress” and that “we expect that he will make a full recovery following rehabilitation.”
