What do you say to your family when you don’t know if you’ll ever see them again?
In February 2022, he told his wife and children the war had begun. Then he left as Russian forces advanced towards Kyiv, unsure what the coming hours would bring.
This is President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Before politics, he built a successful career in Ukrainian television as a writer, producer and performer, even portraying a president on screen. In 2019, he was elected President of Ukraine. Three years later, Russia launched its full-scale invasion.
Sitting down with him was surreal and an enormous responsibility. It was a rare chance to hear his account of the first hours of the war and the decisions that followed.
We discussed things like:
How he found out Russia had invaded.
Why he refused an offer to evacuate Kyiv.
The 64km Russian military convoy advancing towards the capital.
How Russian forces tried to capture a key airport.
His account of discovering hundreds of bodies after Russian occupation.
What he believes it will take to end the war.
But I also wanted to understand how he’d been coping.
One of my first questions was simply, “How are you doing?” His answer was: “It’s hard.”
He spoke about meeting parents whose children had been killed. Some, he explained, simply ask him for a hug.
And as he spoke, there were tears in his eyes.
Whatever your views on the war or the decisions made by those involved, this is a rare opportunity to hear his account of events that have changed millions of lives.
Because behind every map, every headline and every political decision, there are real people.

A frustrating aspect of this show is that the host doesn’t say in any detail what he’s going to ask you about and then gets to confront you with a big stack of research that it’s not possible to pause and do fact-checking on and then it turns out some of it’s not true.

Bucha. It was a genocide, recognized by everyone. They buried hundreds of people. They tortured people. We found the grave. There were, I believe, around 500 people. When we liberated those towns near Kyiv, there emerged this, you know, this kind of hatred for the Russians, right at that moment. Not even at the moment when they started the full-scale war. Back then nobody understood what it really was yet. People understood what this war was and what Putin did personally when we found those mass graves of tortured adults, children. I mean they didn't just kill them, they tortured and killed them.
When we liberated Bucha, I said, bring every journalist here. Don't touch anything, just bring the journalists. The whole world simply has to see this. Imagine finding a mass grave in the U.S. or in Britain, God forbid, with 500 tortured people, adults, kids, dogs, animals shot dead. I mean, they held hunting sprees there from military vehicles. People were running, they were shooting, just hunting, playing games. They literally just played with people, like slavery. So how, after this, can you listen to Putin? And how, after this, can you forgive?

Guy who for years very openly positioned himself as political opposition to the Democratic Party is shocked that the Democratic Party is not rushing to his defense. Lol.
Also, MY GUY, if you're just a "streamer from CA," why would you expect Democrats to defend you?
Hasan Piker talked about how lonely it is doing what he does every day with very little support from the Democratic Party against the Republican Party's slanderous attacks against him. They never push back against the harmful rhetoric, but instead lean into the right-wing framing:
"It's an unbelievably frustrating situation and I'll be honest with you; if I wasn't such a stubborn piece of shit, I probably would have given up. I'm not going to, I'm going to keep pushing but it is very lonely here.
We have our community. We have our allies in independent media. But, with no institutional support, with no top-line Democrats coming out and swatting away these ridiculous and slanderous lines of attack, it feels pretty fucking lonely. I'm just frustrated, man.
What's frustrating about it is that it's self-defeating for the Democrats. It's unbelievably stupid to lean into Republican attacks against the left in general, not just with me, but with any number of different left-wing candidates. Never concede to oppositional framing."

Since October 4, the Houthis have besieged Taiz, one of Yemen’s largest cities. 600,000 people there who depend on aid can no longer be reached, and the city is running out of food, water, fuel and medicine.
Here’s Hasan Piker defending the Houthis, who are using starvation as a method of war:
0:15 October 14, naming Taiz himself: “The Yemeni population has suffered tremendously. And not because of the Houthi rulership, but instead because of the Saudi blockade.”
1:00 October 17: “Recognizing the legal right to resistance against colonial occupation, both that the Palestinian resistance has and also other militancies like Ansarallah [Houthis] and Hezbollah have as well.”
The UN’s food agency suspended aid in Houthi territory after the Houthis diverted it, looted a warehouse and detained dozens of UN staff.

Just before this poll hit, the Mitchell poll that also showed me in single digits hit. That poll was bullshit - and our team proved it. It was an open SurveyMonkey link that people were able to send around to friends and take multiple times. We expended a lot of capital (and took a serious risk) - calling it out as bullshit. MIRS ultimately declined to publish it because of shoddy methodology.
But then this one hit immediately after. It was a one-two punch. Then all of the sudden it was a pattern - and people believed it had to be true.
It killed us.
These were some of the absolute worst days on the campaign. Especially for my team. There are no words to explain the morale blow, and nothing I could do or say to my team to fix it. Just an excruciating, nauseating blow.
By that point, we took a risk and we spend our money. We put our ads up. They were working. But the damage was done. And I was drowned out by outside spending and the narrative that we had completely collapsed.
