University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson and assistant coach K.C. Beard are both in Florida with Emanuel Sharp on his draft night, celebrating him getting drafted by the Sacramento Kings at No. 45. "That's how it is at Houston. We're a family," Derrick Sharp, Emanuel's father and a former professional basketball player himself, tells @PaperCityMag. "You've got coaches flying all over the country.
"You got Coach Kellen (Sampson) in Vegas (with Milos Uzan). Coach Sampson and Coach Beard flew here to be with Emanuel. That's just how it is.
"They're going to support their guys through thick and thin. They're here to support. That's just what's expected at Houston. That's why they're so successful."
University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson tells @PaperCityMag that there is nothing like being there on NBA Draft night for his guys. "Of course I'm going to be there," Sampson says on the phone from Kissimmee, Florida where he'll be with UH guard Emanuel Sharp for the second round tonight. "I'm not just their coach. Those kids trust me with their careers. . . Kingston (Flemings) and Chris (Cenac Jr.) are still 19 years old. Their careers are way in front of them.
"I was with Kingston's whole family back in the back before he went out to the green room. I was with Chris and his mom and dad and his sister Cori. Of course their agents are there.
"I try not to be in the way. It's not about me. I just told 'em I loved them, told 'em I was proud of them."
