NEW: Andy Burnham has demanded answers about the insolvency of Poundland, which has its largest distribution centre in his constituency of Makerfield. The PM tells @Telegraph: "If there was a potential owner to avoid this that hasn’t been accepted, then the Business Secretary and I want to know why that is the case. We stand ready to support the workforce however we can.” Burnham wants to know why Gordon Brothers, the chain's owner, rejected a solvent bid from Ireland’s Martin Property Group for the entire Poundland business earlier this week. Story here with @LukeVanceBarr: telegraph.co.uk/business/202…

This is absolutely dreadful news for small businesses and the self employed. Whoever came up with this has never run one and has no conception about irregular cash flow into small and self employed businesses. This will kill many of them
The hidden tax measure in the Budget is huge for people paying tax under self-assessment - sole traders, partners, landlords, retired investors. For 6th April 2028-29, you currently pay 50% of your income tax late in the tax year in question (in January 2029), 50% just after the year end (in July 2029) with any make-up payment in January 2030. Under the new proposals you will pay your tax perhaps monthly or quarterly (TBC) from April 2029 onwards. A rough analysis suggests the impact is to draw about 50% of your tax bill forward, a huge cashflow boost to HMRC and a significant funding issue for the self-employed. The Treasury recognises this, and expects to raise £1.3bn of additional tax in 29/30 as a result of this change. The cashflow impact of the accelerated charge will send some businesses to the wall.

Courts ordered them tagged. More than 5,000 walked out without one. Violent and sex offenders, domestic abusers, stalkers. Serco hit its targets for trying to fit tags, not fitting them. Victims were told they'd be protected. They weren't. @LeeAndersonMP_ raised this in Parliament. Who's answering for it now? @AlexJJNorris @ShabanaMahmood @MoJGovUK

It's easy to talk about 'breathing space' and 'hope for the future' when you're on a taxpayer funded salary of £166,000. This Chancellor is doing nothing to lift the strangle hold of taxation and cost of living pressures from the British worker. He's alright.

🚨BREAKING: BBC told to hold antisemitism inquiry by MPs if it wants its charter renewed MPs have told the BBC it must hold an independent inquiry into antisemitism if it wants its charter renewed in 2028. The demand follows claims of an antisemitism crisis at the broadcaster and a £400,000 payout to a Jewish filmmaker.

A complete waste of taxpayers’ money: building prisoners their own personal podcast studio, with Labour matching the cash. This money should fight crime, not let prisoners cosplay as Joe Rogan. An insult to victims. Reform must end this ridiculous project now.

🚨John Healey Cuts Planned Defence Budget by £2 Billion The former Defence Secretary who once quit over funding shortfalls has now, as Chancellor under Andy Burnham, overseen a £2bn reduction in planned Ministry of Defence money for 2027-29 compared with earlier Labour targets, despite rising threats. Healey promises to reach 3% of GDP on defence by 2030 but delays the real plan until next year’s review, using cuts elsewhere to fill gaps. Tory leader Kemi Badenoch called it a hollow “plan to have a plan,” while Lib Dems branded the move shameful for leaving troops worse off. A clear case of penny-pinching security.

This from the Minister for Women @bphillipsonMP… All as she continues to completely ignore the safety concerns of the #women and girls of #Piddington When will you engage with us, Minister?! We will always make the time to talk.
The time for talk has long passed. This government is putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to supporting women and girls. We'll back practical action to confine misogyny to the history books - in public services, workplaces, and online. theguardian.com/society/2026…

Burnham’s budget summed up in 3 words, with two ticks and a cross. Alarm clock Brits paying even more taxes so the shirkers can get a 3.5% pay rise. The welfare party getting ready for a general election. You’d be mad to vote for more of this.
